Please pass this on to everyone you know who climbs (who cares where they live!)

Access has been closed at Cerro Romualdo (San Luis Obispo, CA) since August. It is the best climbing in the county, but the past access procedures scare a lot of people away. A big meeting will be held tomorrow (Jan 20) with the National Guard and we will be lobbying that they reopen the base to climbers. Their reasons for closure are non-issues (soil erosion, sensitive plant life, liability issues). There are fewer than 100 public users a year there. It is state owned land and climbers have been climbing there with permission from the NG for over 10 years. Another base nearby allows hungting and fishing on their property. It might make a difference if you'd like to send a polite email urging the camp commander (Colonel Fisher) to reopen the climbing area at Cerro Romualdo. If you feel inclined to do so, the commander's email is

kelly.fisher@us.army.mil

Again, please be polite, we have to get them to work with us, but YOU CAN make a difference.
Thanks, Tom Slater

Colonel Fisher,

please reconsider the closure of the climbing area at Cerro Romualdo. This place is precious and has great climbing. We are conscientious about how we treat our surroundings and will continue a leave no trace ethic while recreating at the peak.

Sincerely,
