Cocktail suggestions?
Report this Post
Can't Post

I'm going on a 9 day trip on the Colorado River this April and need suggestions for evening coctails.

The parameters are:

It has to be mixed ahead. No glass.
Size matters. Nine days worth has to fit into two 1 L Nalgenes at the max. Potency is favored.
Not TOO sweet, but not straight liquor.
No cloying fruitiness.

I'm thinking whiskey sours made with Wild Turkey 101.

Suggestions from the mix masters?

I don't drink anymore, but thinking back, I would surely relish an end of the day margueita with salt and rocks.

I pre-mixed margs the last trip and they worked out well although I ran out after six days. I mix my margs stiff (50/50 or there about) just to make up for the sweetness of most marg mixes. Ice is at a premium on The Grand Canal so on the rocks is out. Any drink has to be good right out of the drag bag.

Whiskey Sours sound good. If you're limited to just a couple of 1 liter Nalgenes I would suggest going with a powdered sour mix. Easy to pack and easy to mix as needed, plus would save more room in your containers for the good stuff. There are actually a bunch of powdered mix's available, everything from Bloody Mary's to Long Island Ice Tea, they're not the best, but would be ideal for a long trip, IMO.

Cheers!

Think: It’s evening; you’re sitting in a lawn chair on the beach across from Deer Creek, the sun is turning the temples golden and the sexy breezes are starting to waft down canyon.

What would you like to drink?

TSR's?....haven't had one since 1979....don't know how the OJ would hold up. Kinda sweet but refreshing.....I had a bad experience with a gallon of TSR's and a tomato chile pepper once.....haven't had one since.....

I'd have to say vodka tonic but without ice it may not be quite the same. you could have one nalgene with vodka and just pack along a couple plastic liters of tonic. Fresh lime is easy to pack.

The other alternative would be some good scotch or bourbon to sip. No ice required. You can't go wrong there, particularly if it is still pretty cool in the evening in April.

TSR = Tequila Sunrise

Tequila = 1 part
OJ = 1 part

Grenedene = small part?

Mix and enjoy. A little sweet but refreshing......like I said.....I had a bad experience with them....so it's been a while.

...once I learned how to drink Liquor, I never went back to sugar based mixer

Definitely time for Gatoritas. Half lemon lime gatorade, half tequila.

How 'bout Everclear and Grapefruit juice with a little salt on the rim?
I'll call it a "Terminate and Stay Resident".

...it's a date then....TSR's on the veranda some warm summer evening....we can relive are illspent youth with drunken stories of yore...the grenedene is the problem though....I still shudder at the colorful soup I expelled from my stomach that night.....maybe cold beers and or a nice bottle of a cab or merlot instead....

Not TOO sweet, but not straight liquor.
No cloying fruitiness.

I'm thinking whiskey sours made with Wild Turkey 101.

Well, my preference when looking at anythign with trees in the scenery (notice, that could be my backyard), to WHISKEY......not WT101 is that what you like? I actually started drinking Gentelman Jack aroudn Turkey Day ( 8^) )....that is just fine strait out the bottle.....if you need...a little cola (your choice) is just fine....I prefer Mt Dew and Jack....but eth Gentleman is fine stright....

whatevery the case....I would say 2 Nalgenes are not enough :twisted: :roll:

OK--you may want to try it first before you take it as your only provision for nine days. And, I don't know the exact measurements for a Nalgene, only for a flask...

PER FLASK:
-1 airplane bottle of Drambui or Chambord
-the rest some type of strong whiskey (the stronger the better)

I like the Chambord--sweeter, a little more fruity. My boyfriend takes the Drambui which I can definitely drink as well (and neither of us even like black licorice).

I know you said you didn't want to be mainlining straight alcohol. But, the little mixer bottle definitely takes the sting away from the whiskey. It's not something you need a chaser in order to drink.

If I go with straight liquor I'll stay with Herradura Tequila, a small bag of limes and a shaker of salt. Yum. My mouth is watering.....Damn Pavlov!

Does anyone else laugh a little to themselves when they read the word "cocktail"? Its kinda the same whenever I hear someone talking about have a cup of tea and dipping their teabag or squeezing the teabag.

Anymore suggestions? Right now Whiskey, sour (high proof whiskey lemon juice and confectioners sugar) is leading the pack.

ginger ale and crown royal - better with ice, a can of ginger ale chilled in the colorado would probably do.

also, pimm's cup would be great sitting on the banks of the warm river. Because it's a low octane drink, you can drink the night away and be clerar headed the next mprning - pimm's, chilled ginger beer, and a cuke
