Some people have stated their dislike for this page, but Dragondoor.com has some interesting material (and a lot of ads). Good links abound, use a dumbell in place of a kettlebell.

I also have recently joined the Y, because I'm not climbing due to a foot injury. I do a lot of bodyweight excersize to simulate climbings strains. Be sure to work both push and pull muscles.

Check out the yoga to. It's much harder than I though it would be, a good body tension and flexibility workout.

good luck,

jeffd

ive been lifting at the YMCA for two years now, ive gained 25 pounds of muscle working a climbing specific routine. I CANNOT climb any better then i could before i gained the muscle. and yes i have been climbing regularly. the increased weight counters any gain ive made in strength. im pretty convinced that lifting weights will not help my climbing but cannot stop because of my vainity. 25lbs of muscle looks good but wont help you climb better. im now 6'4" 215lbs.

Ask about volunteer trainers. My YMCA has a couple of very good ones.

Dude you'll have a gay time at the YMCA!

Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.
It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.
It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do what about you feel ...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the y.m.c.a.
I'm sure they can help you today.

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so tight ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
There's a place there called the y.m.c.a.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.
It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

Y-m-c-a ... you'll find it at the y-m-c-a.

Young man, young man, there's no need to feel down.
Young man, young man, get yourself off the ground.

Y-m-c-a ... you'll find it at the y-m-c-a.

Young man, young man, there's no need to feel down.
Young man, young man, get yourself off the ground.

Y-m-c-a ... just go to the y-m-c-a.

Young man, young man, are you listening to me?
Young man, young man, what do you wanna be?

thanks for the replies..

you really can't climb any better with more muscle?

i'm not talking about massive weight gains.... i'm thinking increased strength.

a) i've got a good 15 pounds i can drop from adipose tissue...

b) i think if i can pull down on more weight, i'll be able to pull myself up much easier...

Weight lifting is good for overall fitness. I have noticed gains in climbing with certain exercises, like wrist curls and lat pull downs, as well as improving my arm and shoulder power.

But it's not going to help you much in advancing grades for fingery, body tensiony moves, unless you blend it with climbing specific training (hang boards, campus, pull ups, system, etc).

Also, don't ignore your legs (calves, especially), and core strength. The holds on the hardest routes are not getting much smaller, but the body tension, angle, and slope factor are. Just watch Dave Graham on some videos. His core strength and control over body tension are phenomenal.

Timy Fairfeld has some great resources on his website. He uses weights, but is also hardcore into the ring exercises, and it looks like they are doing him good.

Get strong,
Marc B.
