I heard a horrible news report this morning on a death in Eldo yesterday. 25 yr old male, rappeling related accident. So hard to hear these kind of reports so early in the year. Best to his family and friends... anybody have details? be safe out there folks. KT

I saw a similar report. The accident happened on Rincon. The "Daily Camera" said that he fell 20 feet and hit his head, no helmet. Sad.

Here is the Daily Camera article. My condolences goes out to his family and friends. I feel like doing a head count right now. I hate these moments when you hear of an accident without knowing who the victim is.
In reply to: 25-year-old Boulder man died while rappelling down the face of a cliff in Eldorado Canyon State Park on Thursday evening. The man, whose name wasn't released pending family notification, fell about 20 feet on the Rincon Route at 6:15 p.m., said Boulder County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Lance Enholm. He was with another climber. "His climbing partner ran to the state park office and called for help," Enholm said. The fallen climber landed on his head and wasn't wearing a helmet. "He died while they were evacuating him from the canyon," Enholm said. Crews from the Sheriff's Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Pridemark Paramedic Services and Cherryvale Fire Protection District's Eldorado Springs station arrived at the scene just after 6:30 p.m., Enholm said. Officials are investigating what caused the man to fall.

My stomach always lurches when I hear of an accident. I feel guilty hoping its not someone I know because no matter who, its still an utter tragedy. Condolences to family and friends. Wear your buckets!

I'm looking for an indoor climbing partner that doesn't mind climbing with someone who is brand new at climbing. I've done it once in a lesson. I know that suck for you more advanced people, but I'm hoping a person who is newer or who doesn't mind climbing with a newbie will be free on Sunday, 1/29 to climb at thrillseekers or at Rock & Jam south (2?). thanks! -kelly you can email me back at lloydkellyc@yahoo.com and sorry if I posted this wrong! Eventually I'll figure it out.

Condolence to the family of the poor kid who's passing is mentioned in the papers. It really is awful to hear about something like this.

I'm looking for a partner to climb indoors at the SCC in Colorado Springs Saturday (28th) afternoon-ish. I need to climb on a rope and stop bouldering because I keep twisting my ankle on falls! All levels welcome so long as you're a safe belayer. Email me at lrossi@ix.netcom.com.

Copied from www.mountainproject.com Hello all. My name is Steve Mills and I was the belayer and good friend of of the late James Harr. Here is what happened: we reached the third belay and decided, after much deliberation and attempted route-finding, to forego the last pitch on account of the weather and rap down. We lowered down to the second belay, and then down to the anchors atop Thunderbolt, a short 11d to the right of Rincon. These anchors are about forty feet off the ground. We both reached these anchors and were very excited to be almost back to earth. It was very cold and windy and we were not adequately clothed. James tied a bight in the rope and hooked it to his harness so that both ends of the rope would not fall to the ground when he pulled it from the previous rappel. I took one end of the rope, fed it through the o-rings and tied in. he put me on belay and lowered me down. What happened at this point is still not entirely clear to me, but it certainly involved James tying into the bight on his harness, or to some middle point on the rope, instead of tying in to the OTHER END. Consequently, when I pulled through the slack and had him tight, we were only working with a very small portion of the rope. I saw a pile of rope to the left of me, and felt the tension in the line. I asked James two times if everything looked right to him and he said to go ahead and lower. I began lowering, and about halfway down to the ground the rope zipped through my hand and through the grigri, leaving James twenty feet to fall. He landed on his back and head. If he had been tied into the other end of the rope there is no way that I could have had him taught AND have the rope run through the grigri. James and I had a brief but wonderful climbing partnership. His last words were "Wow, we have amazing chemistry," which was entirely true. We are both experienced climbers - I trusted him and he trusted me and were were always very safe. But somewhere amidst the excitement of reaching the ground after an hour and a half descent and the discomfort of the cold and wind, we lost some of our circumspection; he made an error and I in turn made an error by not noticing it. And he lost his life because of it. May you rest in peace James: you will never be forgotten; you shall continue to inspire me and all others that knew you, as of course you always have.

Any front range climbers also cavers? I have a few questions regarding some stuff in Deer Creek Canyon. The one cave that I checked out last night appears to be an old mine. I had my sons with me so I didn't go inside but it looks like it stretches back quite a ways. Would love to hook up with someone who knows what their doing to check this out.

It's crazy how fast stuff can go downhill when your mind is on something else. Ditto on my condolences, and thanks for posting what happened. I think it's unfortunate that tragedies like this happen, but it's best that we learn from them in the long run. Thanks for posting that report. mother-sheep-I've done quite a bit of caving back in AR, and consequently, all of my gear is there. It's not too involved, though, depending on what you are getting into. Always take good light and a couple of backup good lights. Always wear a helmet (climbing helmet works great). I have some cheap wilson knee and elbow pads that I wear for crawling. I don't know about here, but in AR, everything is limestone and they are usually full of water, so be sure to wear proper clothing. I have one of those 11mm sheath-is-a-rock Petzl caving ropes for rapells. Otherwise, don't go alone, don't get lost, and have fun.

Jen and I are registered for a safety class this Sunday at R&J north. Sounds like it will teach us a bunch of good self rescue techniques. The instructor is Craig Lubben, the cost is $60 and it runs from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. I get the sense it will be a ton of stuff delivered via the fire hose method of teaching. Thought I would throw this out there in case anyone else is interested.

This could be REALLY fun. Stripping in Vegas on the strip. And, climbing crazies on the crags. I know Josh is camping, what are you planning on? Tent or hotel? Drive or fly? I talked with Ken (112) from Walla Walla and he's planning to attend as well. You prolly remember him from Shelf. Quite the sense of humor. And he's good at catching falls. Especially mine.

So it's that time of year again. Single or married, madly in love or just mad, love it or hate it, its Valentine's Day. Which is, of course, just another excuse to party. What: Valentine's Day Dance Party!!! When: Saturday Night, February 11, 8:30pm - ??? Where: Aspen Grove Clubhouse, Boulder Going N on 28th, take the first right after Iris (before Kalmia), then turn right into complex, and the clubhouse is right in front of you (building with big windows and people dancing). (The actual address is 2800 Kalmia Ave if you wanna mapquest, but you turn in to the complex off of 28th) Make sure you park where there are no numbers. You MUST wear RED or [pink]PINK[/pink] and BYOB!
