As i massaged my swollen & painful knuckles on the way back from Ouray i thought to myself - "i really like my new mantis tools, i wish they had some sort of knuckle guard like quarks or vipers" (yes, i know, i know - flip the wrist!) A little boredom and extra time yielded the Frankensteins in the pictures. Took a jigsaw to two fangs and cut the plastic to fit - i probably wont climb leash-less on them (although they are really frig-gin solid) but i wont be bashing my fingers anymore either lemme know if you want the recipe http://www.losangelescriminaldefense.com/photos/IMG_0382.JPG http://www.losangelescriminaldefense.com/photos/IMG_0383.JPG

I am curious as to how you dd it more than what you did. I have given thought to tring to retrofit Fangs to other tools, but I haven't actually done it. Do you think that you technique could be more widely applied? I'm curious because I'm cheep and hesitate to buy new tools if the old ones will do. Cheers, DRS

Nicely done! These tools really do swing very nicely, I agree! did you think about filling the gap between the fang and the urethane on the tool? You might get a bit better rest on it if it wasn't there. perhaps glueing a chunk of rubber/plastic would do it. Best Brent

In reply to: anyone got any idea on substance that can be formed around the gaps? i was thinking something like shoe goo or some epoxy epoxy won't work (doesn't stick to plastic). shoe goo would, but I wouldn't use that. try to find a chunk of rubber. clean it up with sandpaper and lighter fluid, get some contact cement and stick it on. shape it with a utility knife or a belt sander/grinder with 40 grit paper. this should stick, buti i'm not certain. Scuff up the fang before you apply the contact cement. and if this doesn't work, definitely go with bubblegum. Great suggestion anykine! Brent

DONT CUT APART ANOTHER SET OF TOOLS send them to me!! buy the "pinkey rest" at most places that sell the viper tools or: http://www.bdel.com/gear/viper_fang.php you will have to cut the fangs - i did it with a table jigsaw with both pieces interlocked together (like they would be when assembled AND BY THE WAY... if you dont have a pair of matis - check these out!: http://trango.com/prod.php?id=114

It don't matter what you do to your tools the park is bad for your knuckles. How many times have swung an axe at the ice only to have your pick dissappear into a hole you couldn't see, thus crushing your knuckles. That's what over climbed ice does.

just tried them out at lee vining this past weekend and they worked like a charm - im going to try to fit a tooth in the fang (the part touching the ice) to keep it from skating around - pics when its done!
