has anybody used the canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6l is? i'm planning on purchasing this lens and would like to hear others input.

I've got a canon 75-300, also f/4-5.6. Nice lens, make sure the one you're getting has the 'ultrasonic' motor for faster focusing. You will probably need to carry a tripod around with you to avoid blurry images. If you can afford a faster f/stop - go for it (otherwise don’t plan on being able to take photos while dangling on a rope) Depending if you're using a digital camera (and model) you get to x's your mm by 1.6 to get your true zoom. 400mm becomes 640mm! J

thanks for the help. i have purchased the lens and so far am really digging it. i've never had such a powerful lens before, it's truely amazing. i wish it was a little faster but i'm only looking to use it outside.

I have one & find it pretty good. Pays to use a tripod at the long end & stop it down a little when you can - its not as sharp as the primes, but a lot lighter than a 100+200+300+400 L camera bag would be :wink:
