I am interested in finding out what belay devices are being used in climbing gyms across North America. if you could respond with a state or province and let me know what devices are used that would be greatly appreciated. you can email me directly if you would prefer jamie@vectoronrope.com

The gym here in Idaho Falls ID uses Gri-Gri's, as does the gym in Fairbanks AK. I think this is the standard more or less in the us at least.

Here around Atlanta, Atlanta Rocks and Escalade let you use what you bring, or they rent you a tube type (ATC, Trango Pyramid, etc.....).

WI. Been to three of the gyms in the state. Typical belay device is the ATC. For young kids belaying and heavier people in need of a belay, they use GriGri, but all the climbers that go there bring their own ATC. Steve Hope this makes sense. I'm floating high on my prescription drugs right now and everything is real strange looking. Steve I wrote that laready!

I've always seen grigri's used, and i've noticed that many gym climbers are scared to even use ATC's when they go outside climbing. Has anyone else noticed this?

Here in Miami, most everyone uses ATC's. I've seen a couple Grigri's but not a lot.

Almost all Ontario gyms are using grigris, it seems to be the standard around here. The only exeception to that is the University gyms and they use ATCs. [ This Message was edited by: downshift on 2002-08-23 06:23 ]

Our gym in Pittsburgh PA doesn't even allow grigri's and only rents ATCs although you can use anh kind of similar device if you bring yours... I find that teaching newbies with a gri-gri can actually be dangeours... I've seen people open it instead of closing it in a difficult situation and letting the climber fall!

In southwest Michigan, I go to a gym in Grand Rapids, and one in Kalamazoo. The KZ one uses ATCs, and the GR gym uses grigris, though at both you can bring and use whatever you want.

I'm a gym instructor, and i always teach newbies to use the ATC. I show em the gri and other tube types, but in my opinion the ATC is the easiest to use by far, and once the gotten that one down, they can try out other devices. I always tell them to stay away from the Gri until they've gotten some routine with the ATC, since the gri encourages some bad habits, that can be fatal if the belayer is forces to use something other that the gri.

Anyone using the Trango B-52 yet? Just curious how it rates against the Black Diamond ATC as far as stopping power and ease of rope feeding.
