Boulder Canyon areas on sale list

DENVER — Two popular climbing areas in Boulder Canyon are among lands that could be sold under a Bush administration plan to sell U.S. Forest Service land to raise money for rural schools, a nonprofit group said.
Forest Service maps show 21,652 acres in Colorado that would qualify for the sell-off, and Bell Buttress and Dream Canyon are included, said Jason Keith, policy director for the Access Fund. The nonprofit group, based in Boulder, is devoted to maintaining public rock climbing sites.
The Bush administration plan would raise an estimated $800 million for rural schools and roads. Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Loveland, and Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Denver, oppose it.
Mark Rey, undersecretary of agriculture, has said any sales would be limited to isolated tracts that are no longer integral to Forest Service needs.
