Gigantic ones...

I didn't realize that it was going to come out the size of the number 4 they never made, but I'm to lazy to PS it and reupload it.

I have one, but I probably wouldn’t have been able to tell from the batch number a couple of months from now as they are painted on and, in part, already gone. Perhaps I should write them down somewhere I won’t lose them, as in scratching them lightly into the plastic sheath.

As a side note: Of the 5 max cams I got, this is the one unit that also came with trigger wires that were too long to allow for complete retraction over the loop swage bump, requiring modification. I didn’t think this was a big deal, just early production issues – I expect to have to replace trigger wires.

I'm behind a heavy-handed moderation of that thread 100%. I think we would do Malcolm Daly a great disservice if we acted in any other way after all the respect and consideration he's shown this site and it's users.

ditto.

I strongly support that stance, Jay. Malcolm is a world-class great guy and has contributed a tremendous amount to the climbing community, not just to our little RC.com world. He should be given every consideration in how that thread is played out.

Hi Gang,
philbox, thanks for cleaning up this thread. As of last night it had already started to wander, leaving me worried that it would degenerate into an "I hate Malcolm" thread. Whew!

healyje, thanks for posting so quickly. We launched it while I was on the way out to Calico for a PM session and by the tme I got back you were on it. Need a job?

Recalls are tough: this is the fourth one I've done in the 25 years I've been in the climbing business. On the other hand I've got tons of friends out there climbing on my gear and I can't stand the thought of someone getting hurt because of something that I might have fucked up.

Please don't speculate on axle head colors or the looks of a rivet from a grainy photo. The heads need to be measured with a special pair of calipers ($300) that will fit into the counter-bore where they sit. We're talking the difference of .220 vs. .235. That's 15 thousandths of an inch... Those credit cards that are loading up your wallets are 30 thousandths on an inch thick. By any standard that's hard to eyeball.

If the batch number has worn off, send 'em in anyway. We're turning them around in a day or two so it shouldn't bust up your climbing plans too much. Since, logistically, it's almost impossible to reimburse you for he postage/shipping to the factory, when we send your cams back we're going to toss in a carabiner or two. Not much but I hope it helps.

I'm on the road until the tenth so my responses will be pretty sporadic until then. (I actually had to go into a Starbucks the other day to poach their wireless.). I'm in Vegas and headed to the Swell for then next five days where I'll be completely (blissfully) off the grid. Then I'll be at the REI dealer camp in JT for the next week. Again, sporadic contact. If you have any specific questions, call Trango and talk to Casey or Scott. They're fully dialed on this and can help.

I'm going to try t get an FAQ page up on the site in the next hour or so.

Climb Safe
Mal

Fun Vegas Fact
There are 120 pages of yellow page ads in the Vegas phone book dedicated to the "Entertainment" industry. Think "Strippers at your door in 20 minutes!"

thanks malcolm. thanks for clarifying the details of the recall, as well as doing it via a personal post here, where the "public" can be less than forgiving.

this post (and many others of yours) make me regret not having more trango gear.

Wonderfully handled Mal. Others in the business should take notes on how you opperate.

Another great reason to buy gear from Trango.

Mal chimed in to the recall thread.

Mark my words, if you ever plan on starting a business in the climbing industry, you would do well to read Mal Daly's RC.com post history first.

Malcolm, I will definitely be sending mine in, but as I have some calipers and micrometers handy, could you tell us exactly what should be measured that corresponds to the numbers you posted above? Thanks.

I've just split these posts out of the Max Cam recall thread which I subsequently sent to the world climbing news forum. I'm just wanting to keep the Max cam recall thread free from hijacking. It needs to stick to the issue and not devolve into another dummy spitting thread.

The max cam recall thread needs riding shotgun over.

Hi gang,
There's now an FAQ page on our website that has more detail and explanation of the MaxCam issues. Check it out at: http://www.trango.com/pdfs/MCfaq.pdf. Of note is how we are marking the inspected/repaired cams so they can be separated from the ones we haven't checked.

Thanks for all your support and understanding on this PITA situation. I'm headed into the Swell for the next 4 days and will be off the grid. Gotta plug some cams....

Another fun Vegas fact. There is actually no "legalized" prostitution in Clark County itself. If you wanna buy yourself some fun after a day at red rocks you have to drive yourself quite a ways
