is it ok to use those screwgate ovals that you can buy at the hardware store as rap rings so that you dont wear down the actual rings they say they are rated to 2200 lbs.?

Yes, no problem. but pay attention to the size you buy. I see the little skinny ones around here somethimes. The strength on those new, is 1300 lbs each. Sooooo, 10 years later, the little guys are all rusted, and I see climbers belaying right off off them occasionally.
Wonder how strong they are now with some of the steel worn off, old and rusty.??:?: :?:
Spend the money and buy the thicker stuff. :!:

You're question puzzles me. The rap rings are just for that, rappelling. If you're going to lower off of them then they will wear down. So just don't lower off. I hate those things, especially as bailers. They clog up the hangers and I can never get them off. Find out what the standard in your area is for anchor maintenance. If you don't know, leave it to someone who does. If you're going to do it yourself get nice big beefy stainless steel ones and use them to connect chains. If chains are frowned upon, ugly and may cause access issues then don't use them.
