hey all, i'm looking for world class climbing areas outside the united states that have famous (or infamous) climbing camp grounds or communities. i guess what i'm really looking for are the camp 4's of the rest of the world. i have heard that el potrero has a super friendly climbing community, and that there are a ton of climbers at the best climbing beaches in thailand. can anyone else tell me about any other amazing international climbing areas with lots of resident climbers, and ideally a colorful history? thanks for your help.

How about Miguel's at the Red River Gorge? I don't know too many other pizza shop owners that sell cams and quickdraws that are featured in Climbing magazine. I would say that Miguels is the heart of the Red.

There is a free primitive campground at Cuvier in Fontainebleau. I stayed there several times and always found colorful partners from all over the world.

The Pines campground at Mt Arapiles in Australia is very similiar to camp 4 in being full of climbers and proximity to climbing.

Ogawayama, Japan has an outstanding capground situated in the heart of the climbing area. The community that becomes of the area is outstanding.

Rogers @ kaymoor in the new river is chill. 13 mile camp in red rocks. the already mentioned love shack in the red river. Rifle, lots of fun there. i feel that most places will have a soulful climbing camp ground if you are just willing to look.

Gunks: The deck at the deli for hanging out and multi abuse campground for the fun camping thing. However the latter is certianly not as good for camping as other places. sigh. Hope I did not start another flame fest by bringing up the Gunks camping situation.

Alright,
I confess!!!! I did boulder once in Nafplio, Greece... We were playing on the castro... It is a cliff below a 12th century castle. (It is a beautiful spot.)
A shop owner watched us, came up and gave us wine. He then invited my whole crew to his house. The man wanted to know my name and he kept giving me this look... (I knew something was up, but I was having too much of a good time to focus on it.)
Anyway, the shop owner fed us dinner and gave us a few rooms for free. He then made sure I was alone in my own room with the door locked.
In the morning I woke up to discover my cousins had arrived. Apparently he recognized my last name and tracked down my family. Since I was the only Greek Girl in a group of foreigners, he had called for assistance.
This is why my experiences don't count...

Hangdog camp, Paynes Ford, New Zealand. 100m from the crag, limestone from slab to overhanging. swimming holes with boulder problems. The Acid Test. $NZ5 per night. Sometimes it takes a few days to answer their email cause everyones out climbing :)

I'll put a second on Hang Dog. The climbing is good (not the Valley but good) and there is so much to do. great climbing and 2 awesome swimming holes a 5 minute walk away, neat ocean-side climbing about a 5 minute drive, 3 km into town on rickity old bikes available at camp, and Takaka is a great little chill town. there is so much more, all kinds of beautiful things to see and adventures to be had on rest days. i just spent a month there, loved it. great international scene and you don't have to have a car to survive there.

Spain, the hut up in Galayos, one of the coolest places to hang out after a day a multi pitch alpine climbing. And the guy who takes care of the hut is really unique! Never met anybody so positively crazy before! Te queremos majara!

I would second a vote for the chief campground ... but back when it was called "psyche ledge" and filled with garbage, partying teenagers, etc. Before the nice campsites, rules, and sanitation. The place was a crazed dive.
Waterworld in Penticton. Packed like sardines, a short drive to the climbing, cheap, and traffic flying around. For three months every year
Yamnuska meadows. Illegal now, but people lived there for summers. I did. Great times.

Third vote for Hangdog Camp! I spent the winter there last year. It was awesome... it rained a lot, but there were a few international holdouts and we played a lot of cards, drank a lot of cheap beer, and climbed every second we could (man, you get bored of Bo Peep Slab after a month of rain!!!). You've gotta love that campfire ring. I've spent a LOT of time in the Cookhouse, the rain on the tin roof... I miss that place... Hangdog will always have a special place in my heart.
Shoutouts to whatever that hut at Castle Hill is called, also to the Homer Hut... great scenes for climbers.

there is quite a number of climbing camps in frankenjura, or so im told. a buddy that visited really like the scene.
then theres the camp at paklenica, croatia. at the peak of the season (beginning of may) its absolutely crowded.
and the camp in osp, slovenia. less than 15min to the big wall. plus its legendary.

In spain two areas stick out to me.
At the Base of Sella there is a stone hut refugio where people camp out and cook together.
By Montserrat, there is Saint Benet a church that has been turned into a climbers hut that is way up in the hills by alot of climbing..
