Hey, I have never sport climbed before but my climbing partner and I are going to Europe this summer and I was wondering whether or not you can sit back on the bolts if you need to. Also does anyone have any ideas of where to go in Europe foe some good climbs.

Thanks

not only can you lean back on the bolts, but you can take massive lead falls on them too

Have you ever climbed on lead? If the answer to this is "No, why do you ask?" then may I suggest that you go to France and boulder? I'm willing to assume that you've never lead before if you're asking of bolts are strong enough to support body weight.

yikes!

hosh.

Fair enough. In that case, yes, bolts are plenty strong and can take body weight (plus!) I'd suggest that you just look for good trad areas though. Why the switch from trad to sport? Trad is where it's at!

hosh.

 It's funny because usually this topic is the other way around and goes something like this. "Hi I'm a sport climber would like to going trad climbing for the first time, is it ok to hang on gear?"

It usually doesn't go, "Hi I'm a trad climber and would like to go sport climbing for the first time, is it ok to hang on the bolts?"

I guess I'm just easily amused today. :D

DO NOT ever lean back on bolts and sit on them. And NEVER EVER take a lead fall on one that is how people die.

I am going to try sport climbing to try some more strenuous routes that I wouldn't trad climb

Answer: yes, one would hope you could lean on them since they are meant to catch falls.

also you sort of asked for these next statement (and Im sure you'll call me some elitist pr*ck, but the point is hardly elistist)

Im not sure whats scarier, someone contemplating going sport climbing who has doubts about whether bolts can hold body weight or someone with the same question who has climbed placing their own gear. Do your placements with cams, nuts, hexes and the rest hold body weight? If not why then do you place them?

About where to go:

There are many, many different areas in Europe. Generally spoken the more to the south the more sports crags you'll find. Southern France, Spain, Italy, Kalymnos in Greece... soo many places to go. Some are bolted to an amount even relativly noobish climbers will find their pleasure (though you should have some experience in leading and know how to rappel, build basic 2-bolt toprope anchors etc.).

Unfortunatly many of the real good places are far too hot for summer's climbing. (I just returned from a fantastic trip to Sardegna which would be one of those places).

All depends a little on how many time you'll spend here. Flying can be very cheap (starting at approx. 50$ a flight), so you aren't necessarily bound to one area / country. Check the International Partners Forum for a lot of info.

As long as you're trying the moves yes.
But of course not if you want to "send" the route.

Northern Europe. Verdon in France is FANTASTIC and not that hot.

They work like a seat belt. If you slowly weight them they just pull right out. You have to load them fast and hard like in a lead fall with a Gri-Gri for the expansion part to activate and catch.

My sport climbing question is this: If someone says the are a 5.8 or 5.9 sport climber, where do you climb? or what do you climb, I think that after the frist weekend you would run out of rock. Or a V0 boulderer??? WTF! I guess you have to start somewhere...I have too much time at work....
