In reply to: so I'm fairly new to the climbing world, but i was wondering if there was a pro circuit? If so, who are some of the best pro climbers There are world cup events held throughout the year in various locations in speed, lead climbing and bouldering every year. The climbing world championships are held every two years. The last world championship was held in Munich in 2005. The top three in the lead difficulty category were Mrázek (CZE), Usobiaga (ESP) and Chabot (FRA). The highest placed US climber was Vadim Vinokur who tied 14th with Yuji Hirayama. Check out some videos of the last world championship at http://digitalrock.de/2005/05_wm/videos/ if you're interested. If you want to know who are the best climbers on the competetion scene, the UIAA produce a ranking which can be viewed at http://www.uiaaclimbing.com/?page_name=ranglist.

if you think that the USA is the centre of the universe, then listen to all the idiots that posted above. If you have half a brain, then listen to what Daithi said... American climbers simply do not rate when it comes to competition climbing in Europe, no malice, just plain and simple fact. The malice comes from having to listen to all of you who only bring up american names when people ask who the best climbers in the world are...

hahahahahaha competitive climbing.. isn't it funny how someone is 'gym rat' of the year, gets his name known... then proceeds to do REAL climbing outdoors.. fortunatley, there are many real climbers busy setting up hard lines rather then climbing in gym competitions competition climbing = crap, climb for yourself, not aginst other people...

They are actually quite fun and there is always a strong feeling of community. "Real" climbers are people that enjoy climbing indoors or out. It is not about being better than other climbers, it is about a fun day climbing with your peers, pushing your limits and watching some really strong climbers. Give it a try sometime.

dave graham and chris sharma are probably the best u.s. climbers, but that doesn't count their test tube baby they had, which they named dave sharma. Dave sharma is only about a year old, but boulders his age in months.

umm, yah I've been to my share of comps : Mens Master B #4 http://www.usaclimbing.org/nationals_results.html?file=2005_adult_open-masters yes, it is about being better then other climbers, hence the ranking system and points system.. if it was for 'fun' they wouldnt score! compare a comp to a good outdoor climbing day.. witch one would YOU choose?

In reply to: so I'm fairly new to the climbing world, but i was wondering if there was a pro circuit? If so, who are some of the best pro climbers Yes there is a pro circuit, with teams and competitions. Watch out for this year's Superbowlder game. My bet for the finals is the Florida Flatlanders vs. the DC Urbanites (but it's mainly about the Petzl advertizing really).

In reply to: compare a comp to a good outdoor climbing day.. witch one would YOU choose? Well there's a fallacious question if I've ever seen one. Why not have both? In fact, I've had multiple days where I've climbed in a competition and climbed outside in the same afternoon. It's not an either/or situation and you can't directly compare the merits of one to the other, nor do you need to choose one over the other in any realistic scenario.

I have to agree with Bler. The "pros" just proj super hard lines (which is cool) but their not throwing up super sweet lines, just hard ones. And you never hear of climbers like Lowe, Stannard, Gill, Pratt, Robins, etc being called pros, they were legends. Those guys put shit up, on lead. Does Sharma or Graham ever climb routes that wernt rap bolted. ha. Granted they do climb hard, push the grades, blah, blah, blah. I'm more interested in people who climb real routes, not a bunch of pros in a gym comp.

The pressure to beat other climbers is there only if you want it to be. In my personal experience comps have been fun and I have found my opponents supportive of my efforts. I manage a rock climbing gym to tell the truth, so indoor climbing seems too much like work. I spend most of my free time scrubbing moss off of crack lines.
