moped or motorcycle?
Can't Post

I want to buy a moped because I could drive on $5 for a whole month.
maybe the first yellow one, but in a diff color.
http://www.gmimotorsports.com/moped-scooter.shtml

however my friend said don't get that because it's not name brand, but name brand ones like Honda are pretty expensive and don't look as cool.

He also said it would just be better if I got a motorcycle. But motorcycles are way too serious.

Plus it is kind of embarassing driving around on a moped.

But what do you all think? Moped or motorcycle, does anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing?

Riding on anything with two wheels you are the prey species.

Get something with enough horsepower to get out of the way.

Keep your head on a swivel.

I've said it before but I'll say it again:
Why is a moped like a fat chick?

They're both fun to ride, but you wouldn't want your buddies to find out.

Don't do the moped thing. You'll only succeed in embarrassing yourself and a chick would never hop on the back of one of them ... unless they are totally geeky. Get something that will get you from here to there with your gear, quick enough to climb. That's all you need ...

jammer's right. you are better off pedaling than mo-pedaling.

try getting a starter motorcycle of some kind...... honda rebel 250 sort of thing.

depending on how comfortable you are with your manhood, you might want to consider a vespa. if you can pull it off, they actually are kindof fun to ride and will carry a day trips worth of climbing gear.

as always, keep the rubber side down.

i own a Dodge Dakota. But I spend about $5 a day on that. This will get me around for a whole month for $5. I don't think Mopeds should be so embarassing.

See otherwise I'd have to get a bike, and in the summers I'd be all sweaty by the time I got to work or college. With this I could get anywhere just as fast as a car for change.

I'm really dissapointed that you would even ask a question like that...trust me, a moped may not seem embarassing now, but wait till you try to ride it around town.

It's not only drunk rednecks who make fun of mopeds...IT'S EVERYONE!

Is a moped so much better than a bicycle? BTW, the things I saw on that page weren't really mopeds: they didn't have pedals. Here's a moped:
http://www.cycletownusa.com/moped.jpg

I've ridden a tiny-engined moped-like-scooter before. Life in the slow lane. If you get the 49cc 4-stroke you'd be amaze how fast it isn't (unlikely to exceed 45MPH, some can only do 30). If you get the 2-stroke, it probably won't be very clean.

If you just want it for short trips around town the low speeds might be OK. Else get something suitable for the highway.

I once read in a UK cycle mag where they compared a few motorcycles & scooters around 500cc on a tour. The scooters weren't bad.

Anyway here are a couple of bigger scooters.

Well you've made it obvious that you already have a vehicle for climbing trips (your truck). So you don't need a vehicle that can carry a lot of shit.

It seems like you just want a vehicle that is fun to ride, is about as fast as a car, and is really cheap to operate.

How far do you commute?
I am in the same situation as you--the solution I found cheapest/easiest is an electrified mountain bike. I commute about 5 miles each way, with lots of hills, and if I included parking and traffic, the electric bike is faster than driving. (With traffic, it takes about 20-30 mins total from office to home; without, it takes about 10-15. The e-bike takes about 15-20 minutes regardless of traffic situations.)

Google search "GoHub" or "wilderness energy" and look around.

I would suggest getting a decent (maybe 4-5 hundred dollar) mountain bike with front suspension. Put on the Electric bike kit (that's another 400 bucks for the Wilderness energy, 600 for the Gohub), and now you have a cool bicycle that can go over 20 mph without pedaling, and does not require any sort of licensing or registration! Also, it has the advantage that you can pedal and go even faster (over 30 on the flats). Charging it up is very cheap.

I have found the greatest advantage to this to be that I no longer consider traffic in my plans--I can leave school whenever I want (rushhour makes no difference to me) and I laugh at stupid drivers for waiting 10 mins just to go one block, as I cruise past.

yeah I checked out wilderness energy. I'd spend about 800 dollars getting that bike. The problem w/ that is you'd have to recharge your battery immediately after using it. So riding to school on battery is a problem. Youd have to pedal there, and then on the way back home you can use the battery.
Also you have to buy new batteries about every 3-4 months I think it was. Which isn't bad since you're not spending anything on gas.

I like Motorcycles... but Im biased because thats what I take everyday to work :)

If your worried about a bike being to big, you can get a 250cc bike...

You can't go wrong with a Moped.

You can carpool with it...

http://www.hemlinfoto.se/...erna/00055-Moped.JPG

You can sleep on it...

http://www.columbia.edu/~md448/moped.jpg

And you can carry a dead pig on it...

I think the decision is no brainer, dude.

I was really considering the moped/scooter/vespa/whatever option last fall, as it meant I would pay a lot less for parking, and have a more-or-less guaranteed spot. Then I started riding my bike, and it wasn't a problem anymore.

Seriously though, why not just pedal? I can't say much, since my commute takes at most 15 minutes, and that's when I have to sit at lights, and am riding uphill, on the way home. But, I do have every intention of riding 2-3 days a week to my new job this summer, ~15 miles each way.

Yeah I think I'm gonna get a 26" mt bike and put a Wilderness Energy kit on it. 22 mph is pretty good. Plus I won't have to pay insurance, parking fees at college, or wear a helmet. Or get a ticket for being drunk when I'm coming home from my friends house late at night.
"I'm a fucking pedestrian oshifer." yeah, I like it already.

But I think if gas prices really do go up more, people are gonna realize there's no point in driving their truck by themselves everywhere the go, and these moped/scooter thingies will get more popular. We'll start to be more like Europe and then when pollution goes down, there will be more open air cafes. Beautiful.

The folks who are recommending a Honda 250 are right on. I had a nighthawk. Paid 600 bucks for it. It would keep up with traffic, but was easy to control. The 250 Rebel seems like it's trying to be something it's not

I've owned several scooters/mopeds and two motorcycles, most in Europe. I would never, ever ride a scooter/moped in the USA. Folks are right - you want a motorcycle with a bit of power to get you out of jams. US drivers just aren't used to looking out for the little guys.

That said, I looooove scooters. I would rather hop on an old Vespa to cruise than some piece of poo 250. Plus, you'd save a fortune on gas with a scooter.

Oh, and I challenge anybody to show me a Lambretta that isn't frickin cool. 8^) MMMmmmmm... only the Italians.... :D
