Hey Mythos arrived today. I know they are supposed to be one of the most comfortable shoes out there, but the shape / fit is pretty aggressive on my feet (from barefooting) so, I am thinking of rubbing a lot of mink / other oil on to make them more comfy and facilitate stretch to my particular foot. Are there any potential issues with this? Anybody else rub oil on his / her shoes? thanks

I've found that used motor oil not only works better, but is environmentally friendly and doesn't involve animal cruelty. I just stick my feet in the five gallon bucket in the garage once a week.

Oh they do. That's why they need concerned humans to look out for them. I forgot to mention that after my weekly used motor oil dousing, I toss my shoes in the dryer on high for a half hour or so to remove the excess.

In reply to: I've found that used motor oil not only works better, but is environmentally friendly and doesn't involve animal cruelty. mink oil from mink = cruel leather from cows (on your mythos) = not cruel I'm sorry, there seems to be a little hypocricy in your reasoning. Unless you're a vegan and wear evolvs, and no leather, you'd be quite the hypocrite. On another level, the soldier that died so you could have that oil might think the mink oil's more humane.

In reply to: You do realize this is an ask a stupid question get a stupid answer thread, right? you are half right - the answer was really stupid, even more so because part of its stupidity was probably unintended

It's not a stupid question. Yeah, it should work. Just make sure to dump any extra mink oil down the drain when you're done so you can piss off the hippies even more by wasting the product that you violated their ethics (note, not yours) to purchase. and don't forget, Nuke the whales!

I'll be a nice guy and give you a relatively straight answer: Just break 'em in the old fashioned way - go climbing. A few hours either outside in the sun or in a sweltering gym will have 'em feeling great! And really, what would you rather do, go climbing for a few hours, or rub oil on your shoes for a few hours?

I stand behind my position that wondering whether or not to put OIL on your CLIMBING shoes is a stupid question.

In reply to: I stand behind my position that wondering whether or not to put OIL on your CLIMBING shoes is a stupid question. it's not like i am planning to rub oil on the rand / sole. fyi, the leather already has natural oils in it, and your feet release oils inside the shoes anyway. so don't delude yourself that there are no oils in / on your shoes

Ok. I'll admit that I have a sarcastic sense of humor that is obviously lost on many. Let's start over. Hi Zivo! Good questions! Yes, there are potential issues with rubbing a lot of mink oil on your new shoes. The main issue (since I'm sure you're talking about just the leather areas of the shoe) would be having the slippery oil transfer to the rubber parts of the shoe during the process of climbing and while storing the shoes. Another potential issue would be transferring oil to the rock or plastic, making it slippery for the climbers that follow behind you. And lastly, oiling modern leather has been discouraged for quite some time, as it will cause the leather to become too soft and is unnecessary due to the naturally occurring "oils" in the leather (which are a part of the leather and do not transfer to other surfaces like an oil applied to the surface does). I don't oil my climbing shoes and don't know anyone who does. Hopefully this helps. :D Have an awesome day! :D

Anytime. My weekend will probably suck cause I've been in a cast for 8 weeks and all I have to do is be a smartass on RC.com between upper body workouts. You'll all be rid of me soon I hope. Cheers.

Hey Zivo your Mythos will stretch out beautifully if you just give them some time. I wouldn't oil them up with mink oil or anything else. Just wear them a lot and they will stretch in all the right places and form to fit your feet. Good luck! -Mike
