so far all of my gear purchases have been from climbing stores. I was just wondering how safe it is to buy gear such as carabiners, nuts, hexs, cams, and slings off of internet sites. i mean you can't check the gear before you get it or anything. although if you think that the internet sites are reliable enough to purchase gear off of could you please list some trustworthy sites

well climbing stores with online stores are fine REI, EMS, MEC, Rock & Snow

Gearexpress.com
TradRack.com
Mgear.com

are a few very reliable online stores with good customer service. You'll get what you order or they will fix it quickly

I've been using GearExpress for years. Not just internet, they are great to chat with on the phone and they will get you stuff not on thier site. Price matching too, I shop around other places if GX doesn't have it, then email a link to the other site. They have always matched price and got the gear for me. Most stuff sent same day too!!

Also, if you need guidance, like "what do I need to do this??" They will be fair and not try to sell you the highest priced stuff.

http://www.wildernessexchangeunlimited.com
http://www.bentgate.com
http://www.rockandsnow.com

All of the above stores have real knowledgeable climbers inside the stores, you can call or email them, and they ship promptly. Basically, they're local stores selling online, perhaps the best of both worlds...

if you're buying alpine stuff, call wilderness exchange...

If you stick with a reputable online outfitter, there's not reason to be concerned. Yea, it's nice to be able to hold that cam in your hand before you throw cash down for it, but if you order it and there's something fishy about it, call their customer service, they'll probably help you out.

Ditto on GearExpress. Never had a bad experience with them.
