I was looking at some of the metolius easy aiders today, and got the idea that you could sew on a calf strap and buckle, and be able to gain the advantages of the russian aiders.

can anyone see why this wouldn't work?

I've never used the adjustable aiders before, but it seems to me like they may suck, as you'd need to reach down to sinch them up while top stepping.

Adjustable aiders are mainly used for jugging, that is there main application. They are handy when speed climbing, which the jugger uses the speed aiders and the leader uses ladders.

A bit OT here, but does anyone make an adjustable low-profile aider. I have pocket aiders that are useful when you only expect a small amount of easy aid on an otherwise free climb, but adjustables that didn't have reenforced steps would be even smaller. I've used the Yates...which have the 4ish inch wide plastic foot rest that's great for a day-long jug fest, but not quite what I had in mind for the "minimum stowable unit".

I have a pair of the BD alpine aiders that work great. Small enough to stuff into a chest pocket or in a pack lid until you need them.
