A Voluntary closure for Area 13 @ Clark Canyon is being supported by the Eastern Sierra Climbers Coalition and the Access fund see www.climberscoalition.org for info, more info will be posted on the Access fund site by next week. This voluntary closure is valid until Aug 1st, 2006. Raptors have been sited nesting in area 13 and the ESCC and the Access Fund feel it is in the birds best interest to avoid climbing in area 13 for the short term. This is a voluntary closure, hence you can make your own informed choices as to what is the best course of action. Considering that climbing is a recreational activity and not needed for our survival as species, it would seem reasonable to respect the natural nesting areas of raptors. It is possible that we will have no negative effect on the bird by climbing in the area, but why should we potentially stress these creatures out just for a few easy sport climbs, that we can all climb on without bothering the birds by Aug 1st anyway, since by Aug 1st the birds should be done raising the young ones. Do what you will, but please think about it! Thanks! Zeke Federman ESCC President
