Voluntary Temporary Climbing Refrainment at Area 13 in Clark Canyon:
Climbers are asked to refrain from climbing in the area called "Area 13" located in Clark Canyon, Eastern Sierra, Ca until Aug 1, 2006, due to the discovery of nesting raptors on that cliff. Please let others know about the voluntary and temporary refrainment. The typical distance of a raptor closure is 100-150 meters to the left and to the right of the nest to reduce the potential of visual and audio disturbances during the crucial time of the raptors fledging cycle. Due to the small cliff width of Area 13, local climbers in cooperation with the ESCC, Inyo National Forest and the Access Fund have asked that climbers refrain from climbing in this area until the young raptors are able to leave the nest, which is typically around Aug 1st. This is a "voluntary refrainment" simply because nobody in the entire scientific world has a definitive answer about how climbing actually effects raptors. Never the less the generally accepted approach supported by the Access Fund and most climbing coalitions throughout the U.S.A has been to give the birds some time and space to complete the "fledgling cycle", this has been accomplished in various climbing areas in the past by many a temporary and voluntary climbing refrainment, supported by climbers.Clark Canyon is on your public Forest Service land and we all share the land, so make your own educated decisions about climbing in area 13.Thank you for your support of the temporary and voluntary climbing refrainment!
