I am new to aid climbing so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
When you step up in the ladders and want to connect yourself to your top piece, is it ok to connect the fifi directly through the grab loop on the ladders? It seems like the fifi may be a bit too hard of an angle for the loop and it may break the loop.
I was out the other day and planned on connecting the fifi directly to the biner on the piece, but found it too awkward to get my body that close to every piece. I ended up connecting my daisy with another biner(connecting a loop on the daisy close to me and the biner on the piece), though fifi-to-grab loop would have been easier.

I think most aider grab loops are full strength, and a fifi hould should not damage it. i do it all the time.

Better yet, learn to T-off and you can top step without ever needing a fifi.
They really have limited utility and tend to catch on stuff at just the wrong time.

The top loop on most aiders are reinforced for abrasion and are full strength. Check out the web page of the manufacturer of your aiders to be sure. I have yet to add t-ing off to my bag of tricks, but no doubt Ron is correct that it makes using a fifi a lot less necessary. Pick and choose what's appropriate for your learning curve.

the loops should hold your weight ..
though its sort of a "once in a while" sort of place to connect the fifi to .. in my system its much better if i get the fifi as high as possible (its an adj. fifi) ..

I don't get it! If you're climbing up to your top piece, why would you fifi into your aiders instead of directly into the piece? This makes no sense.
Put the fifi into the piece, dude. Get yourself a Kong adjustable fifi rigged with slippery 6mm cord, as it's handy to fine-tune your topstepping.
