hello again everyone, if you all have not seen one of my previous posts. I am doing a technical report for a college class on rock climbing, more specifically ropes and rock climbing. So if you all could help me, I am conducting a survey and I need at least 100 responses for this to be somewhat accurate. I am trying to find:

1) The type of climbing you do (TR, Sport, Trad, etc)
2) Brand of rope
3) Size of rope (diameter and length)
4) have you ever had a rope failure, please explain.

Let me be a little more spefic now...If you climb more than one style, list your preference for the rope, size and failures if any, for each type individually. If you all could do it in that sort of order you would help me tremendously, thanks everyone.

Not on me, but I carried a guy out once who had a rope break while rapping, I detailed it on this site twice previously.

I do TR's , sport and trad (use seperate rope dedicated to trad though)

I use Beal ropes for everything

60 meter ropes x 10.2 (some TR/sport ropes are shortened older ropes)

Never had a rope failure, but I retire or 'chop' ropes with sheath damage

Well, what about those of us who use specific ropes for certain stuff? I wouldn't exactly expect people to use the 9.1 mm Mammut Revalations for Top Roping and hang dog routes - they are likely have to have different ropes for hang dog projects.

Sport Leading
Beal edlinger II 10.2mm (50M) or Bluewater Accelerator 10.5mm (60M)(depends on length needed for routes)

TR:
Beal edlinger II, (probably should start using the supersafe for this, but it's the perfect length for the TR areas here, so I don't need the extra 10 M of weight).

Trad:
Bluewater Accelerator (soft catch, 60 M rope)

Never had a failure of any rope, nor have I had any sheath cuts. I do have prefered brands for handling characteristics (both of the above ropes were bought due to price, not because I felt they were superior to others on the market).

I also have a lovely new Mammut SuperSafe 10.2mm that I've yet to start using - waiting to retire the Bluewater first.

1) Primarily trad

2/3) 60m Dry Edelweiss Axis 10.3 & 60m Mammut ?? 10.5 (I greatly prefer the Edelweiss)

4) Never, but the Mammut kinks like crazy, and can be a bear for the belayer. It's for this reason, that I went back to Edelweiss for my 2nd rope. ( I previously had an Edelweiss 60m Dry Anniversary rope)

Where's Jay? We need Jay. To explain why 100 or 100,000 responses does not make a survey more accurate. Hopefully, your prof already knows the answer to this too. 8^)

I've done most types of climbing, except expeditions, and have an uncounted number of ropes around the house, in the car, up the sport tree ... ranging from 8.4mm to 11mm, and from 30m to 70m, at least 4 different brands. Not all of these are still fresh enough for leading. Current favorite is a bi-pattern Sterling Velocity, 9.8mm x 70m, but I have a prototype 9.4mm x 58m that I might try out this weekend in the Gunks.

Over the years, I've had four of my own ropes sliced by rockfall, worn through the sheaths of some others, and cut one in half with a hammer because it got stuck and I had no belay knife. It's hard out there for a rope.
