I'm doing a survey on climbing clothing for a marketing project. If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

1. What are the factors that influence your climbing clothing purchases?
2. What are the top 3 colors do you look for in clothing?
3. What are your top 3 clothing brands you wear?
4. What do you think of pricing on climbing clothing?
5. what do you think of the quality of climbing clothing that currently exists?
6. How often do you wear climbing clothing?
7. What would you change in the clothing you wear?

I'm afraid my honest answers will be of absoultely no help but here ya go-

1. Whatever Out of the Closet has that fits me.

2. Any color but white.

3. Cheap, Easy, & Loose (...and no, that's not my personal description... well, maybe just a little if I'm drunk)

4. The pink tags, the blue tags or the white tags? Pink tags are 50% off.

5. The rich can afford quality, but for the rest of us...well...

6. Whenever I climb- which I guess means all the time.

7. Beggars can't be choosers, but a few less holes would be nice.

Honest answers, again probably no help to you:

1. no factors, don't buy climbing clothes
2. white, off-white, tan (gotta stay cool in the CA sun!)
3. freebies, presents, thrift stores
4. beats me, don't buy new stuff (OK, not quite true, bought a pack of socks last year)
5. no idea
6. only if I get something from question 3 (so rarely)
7. nothing, works fine

1. What are the factors that influence your climbing clothing purchases?

On sale or not on sale, that is the question!

2. What are the top 3 colors do you look for in clothing?

I have no idea which three are on top, it depends on how the store arrangeed tehm idiot, what do you think I can read their minds?

3. What are your top 3 clothing brands you wear?

Cheap, Cheaper, and cheapest.

4. What do you think of pricing on climbing clothing?

IT's too expensive unless is is on a deep discounted sale.

5. what do you think of the quality of climbing clothing that currently exists?

Sucks. Thorns rip all quickdry. Rock wears out all quick dry. Quick dry is too expensive.

6. How often do you wear climbing clothing?

Every day

7. What would you change in the clothing you wear?

The smell. And climbing pants need good long zippers so you can pee while wearing a harness. and no cuffs, ever.

7. What would you change in the clothing you wear?

1. comfort, durability

2. depends on the intended usage. its usually black or different shades of brown/earthern, but if i want something for mountaneering, i sometimes choose red or orange. somethimes its good to be seen from afar.

3. i really love my cassin shorts. they go with me every time i go climbing. millet fleece, karibu softshell.

4. damn expensive. but you usually get what you pay for.

5. some of it is excellent. take the aforementioned cassin shorts. theyve got about 5 years of cragging abuse behind them and are still going strong.

6. about 4 times per week.

7. nothing really.

1) do i need it know and how much discount do the offer
2) not too important (as long as it is not e.g. pink)
3) brands are not that important (they let produce their goods anyway with the same fabrics and often even in the same company as their competitors). i rather care about where it is made --> us/eu vs. china
4)generally way too expensive
5)standard procedure is: step 1:a young innovative company coming up with good ideas and products. step 2: they are starting to love the scent of dollars and start saving on quality. step 3: money rules, a big company takes over and focuses on masses. good bye to quality. this happened e.g. on tnf, arcteryx and many more. so in my opinion the quality of clothes depends on the phase the company is in.
6) 3 - 4 times a week
7a) take into consideration that not all climbers are weightlifters, sumo-wrestlers or have overweight.
b) nice to have is a small pocket on sweaters and pants/shorts to store a piece of paper (topo) where one can get to without getting out of the harness

1. What are the factors that influence your climbing clothing purchases?

Price and appearance. However the only things I buy specifically for climbing are tank tops, tie-dye t-shirts and occasionally long climbing pants for colder weather.

2. What are the top 3 colors do you look for in clothing?

I stay away from red, orange and yellow because I don't like attacting bees while climbing outdoors. Other than that the rest of the color range is all fair game.

3. What are your top 3 clothing brands you wear?

No specific brands

4. What do you think of pricing on climbing clothing?

It's generally way too expensive.

5. what do you think of the quality of climbing clothing that currently exists?

It's reasonable but generally the same as regular clothing.

6. How often do you wear climbing clothing?

Twice a week in the gym and whenever I climb outside which is once every few months now.

7. What would you change in the clothing you wear?

I'd get climbing shorts as opposed to wearing regular shorts.

1. Price and fit. I'm a fan of the Wal-mart work out section.

2. Colors? What colors? Have you seen the Wal-mart workout section?!? Usually not white though, gets dirty and I'd be up poos creek in a t-storm. So maybe brown, tan, and green.

3. If by brand you mean what the tag says, then I'm not sure and I don't care.

4. It p***es me off. Even if I wanted trendy, well fitting, climbing clothing, there'd be no way in hell I could afford it. Colleges don't seem to pay their students and corporations don't care that colleges don't pay their students.

5. Don't know, don't have any that I've taken through rigorous climbing tests. Maybe PraNa needs another tester?

6. What exactly are climbing clothes? I wear clothes every time I climb, so I guess I wear them a lot.

7. I would like stuff that fits better. Seems Wal-Mart doesn't cater to females with little waists and big shoulder, but to females with big waists (and butts sometimes there's no distinct difference between these 2 areas in Wal-Mart shoppers) and little pocketbooks.

Define "climbing clothing" - do you mean something that has been branded as "climbing clothing" vs the old sweatpant cutoffs that I always wear climbing? I always wear clothing when climbing, but I'm not sure if that means it's "climbing clothing" by your definition.
In reply to:

Here's my wishlist for climbing pants: gusset crotch, loose enough or stretchy enough to move in, cargo pockets, WOMEN'S SIZES. For shirts: gotta be able to move, which is pretty easy to find without needing specialized "climbing clothing".

I agree almost completely with craghag except for the womens sizes part because I'm not a woman. All the rest is right on! If I could rate today she would get a trophy from me!

One chimney is generally good enough? Sheeiish! No wonder Prana can sell $100 pants that the knee blows out on the first time I take a 6 foot fall.

I've had some older clothing that was made out of tough nylon that lasted. Most of the new, over hyped, clothing that is advertised with climbers in the picture but is predominately sold to yuppies that never get off the trail (if they even get out of the city), is crap when it comes to durability.

For winter/alpine climbing, there is some heavy duty clothing on the market that is durable. However, I have struggled to find any light weight, synthetic, summer pants that are durable for climbing (no cotton on multi-pitch).

The light weight schoeller is a joke (the 400 seems reasonably durable but is too heavy for warmer weather). Who cares that it is breathable/wind resistant when it is ripped to shreds. Give me back my tough spider pants that were light weight and breathable. No, they weren't wind resistant, but each pair lasted years. I've went through two different brands of light weight schoeller in a matter of months.

2. For light weight summer clothing, I would prefer white (light grey, light silver is ok). On multi-pitch, you tend to get hot on the sunny leads and cold on the shady belays. Black isn't going to make me any warmer on a shady belay--yea that standard color even for summer/light weight clothing is sun roasting black (followed closely by sun baking dark red and solar collecting dark blue).

What I've always wanted to have in climbing clothing is a pair of nice assless chaps so that everyone can see my hairy ass. Maybe it will bring the price down because you can use high quality fabrics and less material. Plus there will be no seams to blow out. Talk to Oon about it I hear his gf uses them all the time with her strap on.
