I love long multipitch climbs. When you're on one what do you take with you aside from your rack? How and where do you carry it while climbing?

Water bottle? Power Bar? first aid kit? Jacket? digital camera? Small flask of burbon strapped to your helmet?

Depends on the difficulty/style of the climb, how long we'll be hanging out there, and potential weather conditions.

The one place I always carry a little pack is at Bon Echo in Ontario. The cliff comes right out of the lake, so you can't really leave anything at the base (many climbs start on a little ledge off the water). I like to carry a couple liters of water, a bit of food, long sleve shirt, sunscreen, and if I can cram it in there, sunglass case and digital camera.

Usually I won't carry a pack while climbing unless I have no plan to return to the base of the climb. If I'll be walking down/rapping near where the base of the route is I'll just hook a nalgene and maybe my digital camera to my harness instead of bringing up a pack.

I have one of those metolius harness pouches. Holds a small bottle of water and an energy bar or three, a bit of tape, lighter and TP. If I need more water I clip a bottle to the harness. Windbreaker, camera, approach shoes and knife, all clipped to harness. Patagonia R1 tied around the waist, polypro balaclava in the pocket. Mini-LED headlamp and lightstick in my chalkbag pocket.

Beer. Cigarettes. Maybe a camera. And usually, I'll look at my headlamp, say "Nah, I won't need it this time" and then invariably end up descending in the dark.

Wheeee!

wind shell
head lamp
energy gel
tape
diabetic supplies (insulin, syringes, meter, glucogon)
approach shoes (for the rap or walk off)
hydration bladder (2 liters)

Generally I carry the energy gel, diabetic supplies and head lamp in a gutted out chalk bag. The rest of the stuff gets crammed into my hydration pack along with the water.

the smallest kit I take with me (for summer) includes: camelbak containing emergency blanket, tiny emergency kit, knife, headlamp, powerbars and an ultralight windbreaker. oh and of course condoms, as mentioned above.
for colder weather: bigger pack, more clothes.

Nalgene on harness; chapstick, headlamp, and ham sammich rolls in cargo pockets. (Use tortilla shells with ham and cheese, cut in half. No crushing and fits in a cargo pockets.)

Mascot, GORP, powerbar - in a pouch clipped to my harness.
Knife, nail clippers, tape - on a biner, again on harness.
Water - varies - sometimes clipped to harness, sometimes on it's own shoulder sling.
If I remember to bring it, my headlamp - probably in pouch.
Get my partner to carry sandwiches, windbreaker, etc. If I'm carrying jacket, I ususally tie it around my waist.

Rack on shoulder sling.

Depends.

Carry: pocket, drop-and-drag butt bag, pack or nothing atall.

What: headlamp, (note: knife is *climbing stuff*), lighter, bob marley, 2nd lighter (nothing so frustrating as a dead lighter when bob marley's around), perhaps a snack, perhaps not.

My buddy Ang used to bring a surprise treat for the top of a route... a can of pineapple chunks or something similar. Down to the last few sips of water, facing a 2 hour descent... there have been times when I nearly wept with joy at that little surprise. Dude always gave me half, and I him, sometimes more.

More recently those little 2-shot starbucks espresso cans have become our faves.

We don't take any food you can guy in an REI. Ever. We take real food. Angus delights in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He's trad don't you know. I rarely give decent thought to food and will bring whatever I can scrounge the evening before or what I can buy in a C-store along the way.

Raingear or windshirt maybe. Or burlier stuff depending upon season.

Always take sunglasses. We're californians after all. Hat too if its hot.

You take a mascot with you when you climb? That is so awesome. It must kick ass to have someone cheering you on as you pull through the crux, or someone to make you laugh if you're having trouble with a section.

I'm going to have to look into it, I didn't know this was the new thing (though it explains why everyone is taking condoms with them).

depends on the length of the climb. if its a good size multipitch i will haul up my hydration pack with, water (givin) handfull of granola bars, first aid supplies, diabetic crap, maybe a extra jacket or something if its needed. and what ever else i feel is needed.

if its like a 2 pitch ill bring up a bottle of water maybe, or ill just wait till i get down

knife, whissel, is on on the harness

i have a full emergency kit in my pack with everything from a compass to a knife sharpener.

What kind of emergencies are you getting into where you've got the time to stop and sharpen your knife? Why don't you sharpen your knife before you leave the house? Or are you using your knife so much in this emergency that it keeps getting dulled and you're constantly having to re-sharpen it?

I mean, outside of sawing off one of your limbs, I can't really see much need for sharpening your knife mid-emergency ;)

I don't know why every one is bringing condoms. They do not work! They will not protect you! I should know one time I was wearing one and got in a horrible car accident,it did not protect me! I got hurt pretty bad.

Unless it's an all-day affair, all I need is water, a sammich and a whistle. Tape and chalk can serve as first aid if used properly.

I'm just curious, for those who keep a knife on their harness, what kind of knife are you using? I'm paranoid of the knife flipping open at the wrong moment and slicing something critical (either myself or my gear)... I mean a Swiss Army knife stays closed pretty well but it can be flipped open with just a well-placed impact...
