A group of us are flying into denver and then headed to Rifle in a few weeks. We won't have time to climb and drive back to denver on the last day so we wanted to climb somewhere in between Rifle and Denver, preferably close to Denver. Ideally a place with camping nearby, good shade, and good sport routes of any grades. Thanks!

Find a nice neighborhood and park on the street in Boulder and sleep in your car.

In reply to: Find a nice neighborhood and park on the street in Boulder and sleep in your car. Somehow I don't think 3 of us in a small rental car will be that unobtrusive or comfortable. What about Clear Creek? Decent in the summer? Is there any place to crash near there? Any other options? I've only climbed at Castle Rock, the Dome, and Upper Dream Canyon in Boulder. Any other good summertime areas? Thanks

If you are going to climb in Boulder Canyon, there is legal camping in the National forest in nederland. check out the colorado atlas. Otherwise camping is a total hassle around Boulder.

I second the previous two posters. Climb in Boulder Canyon. Tons of decent sport at all grades. Camp at the Boulder Mountain Lodge (closer to Boulder) or free camp up in Ned. If you really rather hit Clear Creek, the only camping I know of that takes tents near there is in Golden Gate Canyon State Park. http://parks.state.co.us/...arkID=83&action=park Good luck!

It's hotter than hell here in Boulder right now. We dawn-patrolled in the shade in Eldo this morning and it was hot by 8:30. IMHO, since you're coming back from Rifle, head up over Independence Pass from Aspen and either climb on the pass (Sport and Trad at 10,000') or cross the pass and climb on Monitor Rock. Great camping, great temps and great climbing. You can be at DIA in three hours from Monitor Rock if you avoid rush hour. If you still haven't found a campground PM me. I have a bootleg i.e. free spot near Nederland and it has a great view.
