I'm headed up to do the classic 5.8 on Clyde Minaret this week (7/25/06) and was wondering what the conditions with respect to the snow slope at the base. Do I need to take crampons, or will I be ok with just my D7's and an ice ax?

Thanks...

ya bro you'll be fine with approach shoes and an ice ax. we just did it a couple weeks ago and had a great time. we did have one pair of instep crampons. my buddy wore them on the approach to the base. could have gone with out them but they did help a little. you might bring one pair and each guy wear just one to be on the conservative side. i guess the snow could have gotten pretty hard if it had been colder overnight. good luck.
