So I was wondering, what is the closest climbing spots to tyrone, pa (thats in between state college and altoona). I know where Rocky Ridge Natural area (hunters) is as well as the hammond wall in state college (on campus). Those are both great places, but I would like to climb more top rope or bouldering that are closer to my house. Now, I know that its rough to find some place to climb thats close, but I figure there has to be somewhere to climb close by. Has anyone seen anything? I have seen an old rock furnace with a crack in it on 550 between state college and warriors mark I'd like to climb. Anyway, anyone know of anything? oh, btw, there was supposed to be a climbing gym in tyrone, anyone hear about this or know anything? it was supposed to be called powerplant.

In reply to: if you know the super secret hand-shake that jason and i know, and you go through the frat-esque initiation, we may tell you where Bear Rocks are... 2 or 3 climbs at coburn too I tried that whole frat thing before, never worked out well for me. I may just get directions from rob, now that I know the names of what I'm looking for. Bear rocks and coburn.

Donation Rocks is between State College and Huntington. Last I heard you really can't climb at Bellefonte Quarry anymore. But somebody please correct me if I am wrong. Otherwise, go to Seneca Rocks in WV.

Oh, they never had a problem with liking me, I just had a problem with taking orders, guess I just wasn't cut out to be a follower. I don't feel like trespassing into the quarry, thanks though. Anyway, can you elaborate on your slang. What's the gap?

delaware water gap, and the gunks, they are small super secret spots, pristine and secluded. joking, well maybe the mt. taminy side of the gap. but you are sitting very close to the mecca of northeast trad climbing. there is top roping as well. everything from scary 5.2's to ridiculous 10, 11, 12's.

Thanks jrathfon, I was thinking thats what the gap was, but I didn't want to guess. Thats a little far for me to go for an evening. I was thinking more along the lines of backyard bouldering. Anything like that, save hunters or bear rocks close bye? And if it wouldn't put you off, would you tell me where bear rocks are? The big ones, not the little ones that are illegal. Thanks

they are in black mo (moshannon). down a dirt road, then take your mtn bike for a little bit. i would give you directions, but I really can't remember them for the life of me, I only went twice. go up the hill to black mo and park on the right i believe, take an old forest road in and they should be off the road to the right (as much as i can remember). it should be public land, and they aren't tiny.

In reply to: Donation is closed too. There's not much that's left open up this way, or so it seems. Why was Donation closed?

In reply to: In reply to: Donation is closed too. There's not much that's left open up this way, or so it seems. Why was Donation closed? Access issues, as always http://c3pa.org/ Quote from c3pa website: "Since the mid 1960's, the landowners of the right side of Donation Rocks have supported informal recreational access to the cliffs on their land. However, after discussing the legal situation with their lawyer and insurance agent, the family has decided that the liability risk is too great for them to continue to allow climbing access. As of July 3rd, 2006, the right side of Donation Rocks is closed to all climbing and visitation until further notice. C3PA will work with the landowners and the Access Fund to see if there is a solution that benefits everyone involved. As you may know, the left side of Donation Rocks (different owners) has already been closed for similar reasons. So, until further notice, please respect the wishes of the landowners, and do not climb at Donation Rocks."

starting from "da-bone" (tyrone), in an expanding circle until you would have driven an hour or so approx. your backyard State Game Lands: Bell's Gap (West)* TR, boulder, 45 min hike Bell's Gap (East)* TR, trad(short), boulder, 45 min hike Shaw Run* TR, boulder, 30 min hike on future Rails to Trails *these are not on the RC db yet, i'm working on the sketches and routes, is NOT a secret handshake thing, full directions will be posted soon, i'll gladly show you how to get there yourself in the mean time or if you want to help me finish scouting the area, let me know, if you have a mtn. bike, you might be able to meet me there from tyrone on some SGL roads and trails Black Moshannon State Park: "Black" Bear Rocks (RC database) - i'll have gps and access data soon north towards Clearfield: Bilgers Rock (RC database) -- TR, trad, boulder, 100 yard walk Panther Rock (RC database) -- TR, boulder, 50 yard walk south towards Huntingdon: Rocky Ridge Natural Area/Hunters (RC database) -- boulder, 10 to 30 min hike Ledge Quarry/Thousand Steps - taxing hike, overgrown trad, bouldering, * no data for here only wanting views as i have hiked by, good height though on main quarry wall south towards Bedford: Wolf Rocks (RC database) -- TR, trad, boulder, 20 min hike Castle Rock Park - Hollidaysburg (? just found on a rec map, not sure about the townships position on climbing at the park, best to inquire) west towards and past State College: Penns Creek/Coburn Rocks (RC database) -- TR, boulder, 20 min hike just a few that i can readily think of.... Donation is closed (always been, sort of, it is on private land, so its been a toleration thing), but Hunters is right next door with far better bouldering Bear Rocks that is labeled on the Allegheny Front Trail map (public usage availabe at the Park Office) and is just off the left of the SGL road is on private property and is the lazy man's Bear anyway the Quarry as far as i know as always been closed in reality, just not in practice, occuring negative incidents whether real or contrived seem to "close" it down on a regular basis i have never trespassed at the private property areas, even the years there were guarded by the "secrecy" clique, and i knew where they were, so i couldn't tell you what you would be missing PA climbing is... well it just is PA climbing, every spot has a shotgun and redneck waiting (supposedly), and you will probably only be allowed to climb on public land if a private citizen with no legal status over you that has climbed there before determines your worthiness. so good luck, you get in any trouble in da bone, just yell across the Game Lands, i'm Long Island trained, carry a bat, and kick yippies for fun on thursday and sunday mornings and ball bat the occasional redneck to loosen up the shoulders for some great dynos happy trails and bloody knuckles!

I call it Rocky Ridge Natural Area though, with hunters in parenthesis. Thanks Dharmatreez for the massive post. I will have more difficulty trying to climb at every spot now, rather than trying to find one. However, I noticed you left out the Hammond wall at university park, state college. I love that wall, its so much fun. I can spend hours traversing it back and forth. Or at least I'd like to be able to spend hours traversing it, right now most of that hour is spent shaking out the arms and fingers.

ya reading the OP (original post), or the first post in the thread if you will, is very key to understanding a thread. much like when someone asks a question, its usually good to listen to the question before giving an answer. and spider, i hope you recognized the frat thing as a joke (re: the other hunter's discussion). i don't advocate secret hand-shakes, just sensitivity with respect to sensitive climbing areas.
