Breast Augmentation and Climbing

I am considering having breast augmentation done, and would really love to hear from other women climbers that have had the procedure. I am wondering if I'll be able to use my pectoral muscles as effectively, or if there are any other physical strength-related issues.

I do not need to know about the risks of breast augmentation, unless it relates to climbing, nor do I need to know that natural is best :)

Thanks in advance, everyone!

OK- I'll bite.

The answer is yes, there possibly is. . There are some risks and any surgeon who tells you otherwise is full of crap. As a climber I would approach any surgery that went near my pecs or shoulders with a lot of caution.

If you are serious about climbing, natural probably is best.

Choose your surgeon carefully if you decide to do this.

I promise that I don't intend my post to be flamebait, and I hope no one's offended by my asking.

Thanks for your reply, justthemaid, I appreciate it. So far I've been told that it should not affect my climbing, but as none of the surgeons I've spoken to are climbers, I really want to get a climber's opinion. If there are any women on this board who have implants, I would love to hear from them!

It will affect your climbing because they cut the muscle off of the chest wall and insert forgein object. (Submuscular implants). You will not be climbing hard again for 1 1/2 to 2 years with submuscular implants. Non sub muscular aren't so bad but are more subject to rupture and rippling as they are not protected by the muscle. Proceed with caution and much information.

I'm not up on the technical details of the surgery...however, as a flat chested climber, I have always considered my lack of endowment to be an advantage. I'm able to pull myself into the wall and pull off some good balancing acts with my A cups not getting in the way. Larger breasts might become a hindrance in some situations.

Hi,

I used to work as a personal trainer. I worked briefly with a young lady that had submuscular breast implants. She related that she could train her pecs little if at all because when she'd first done so it had changed the shape of her breasts (created some sort of a band or crease in the area of the implants). I don't know if this was because of a bad implant job or just her particular anatomy.

I'd imagine the most accurate answer is that there's no guarantee either way -- there's certainly a possibility that it will affect your climbing as well as a possibility that it won't.

Lisa

And hurrah to being able to squeeze in close to the rock!!

The only girl climber that had breast augmentation (I mean, the only one I personally know) had the blobs removed some time later-- this summer... The rumor at the gym has it, the guy who removed it was some climber surgeon that she met in Yosemite... Hmmm,, the guy that jt512 is talking about?

How it affected her climbing I don't know b/c I didn't see her climbing before the procedure. And am yet to see her "post-removal".

But it seems that it is definitely going to interfere, the question is--how much? I mean, even assuming that it doesn't aggect the muscles in any way, think about 2 balloons hanging in front of you as you are trying to reach something...

LOL, I know you don't want to hear anything bad about the procedure, but I'll just say that I like my solution better-- find a guy who likes you with breasts you got naturally :)

Probably the same guy. He's a Yosemite hardman from the day. When he says he's done "the Nose" in a day, he's talking about the route; presumably, the surgical procedure is quicker.

But she is the subject of vast amounts of ridicule. I wouldn't recognize her if she walked up to me right now, yet I've heard as many wise cracks about her boobs as I've heard jokes about George W.'s vocabulary.

Not saying that getting made fun of for having big fake boobs is right, but I wouldn't get them if I wasn't really ready to let the mean words just roll off my back.

As a woman with substantial boobage, I'd say that the less boobs the better for climbing. I have had some trouble in my days - trying to fit into chimneys, balancy moves that require you to get close to the rock . . . not being able to wear cute little tops because you actually need support.

I know plenty of women who got boob jobs and then became athletic later on - all of them regret it. Running, jumping, even dynamic moves are at the least annoying and can sometimes hurt.

Yeah, but she went from practically nothing to enormous porn-star boobs, judging from the pictures.

Besides, they don't make fun of her to her face. They can't get close enough.

I just finished reading the book "Sherman exposed" by John Sherman, and in the last chapter was his interview with Bobbi after her surgery in 199?. Very good reading mix of serious, funny and thought-provoking.

According to her own words she went from AA to C-cups, which in my opinion is nowhere close to "enormous porn-star boobs". But I haven't seen them for myself, maybe you have?

I've only seen her pictures in a guidebook. Didn't look like no C-cups to me. Besides, if they were really only C-cups would she really have attracted the publicity that she did?

Just a suggestion, but I'd want to know if the increased profile would drive me crazy while climbing. Looks like if you were to increase a cup size, you would be adding just over a pound to your chest. There is also something called "the rice" test. Yep, you guessed it. Add the equivalent measure (cc's) of rice to your sports bra and head for the crag. Here's the link of what amounts of rice to add to simulate the correct effect.

maculated - How much boobage do you have? :) I don't want huge boobs, but something vaguely proportional to my frame-size would be so nice.

lena-chita - You're right; I don't *want* to hear anything bad about the procedure, but I'm trying to learn as much about it as possible. Also, I've never met a guy who didn't like the breasts I have now :) But my reason for wanting breast implants is not to make men like me.

jt512- Thanks for the tip on Dr. Yoho. Perhaps I'll try to get in touch with him and ask his opinion on the subject. That's awesome that he's climbed El Capitan as well :P

Hmm... trying the rice boobs on while climbing is certainly an idea. Mostly I'm worried about the affect on muscle strength, though.

Thanks, everyone!
