Val di Mello is one of the best climbing spots in the Alps. it offers everything, from bouldering to multipitch trad, all set in a really beautifull enviroment. As Paolo75 reported, an italian electrical company has revived some old plans to dam the valley to produce electricity. That would pretty much destroy the valley (and climbing as well). Im reposting this here because i (and some others) feel that this is an issue beyond eurofreaks and affects the climbing community as a whole. Just to give you some idea of whats at stake, here are some pictures: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=54356 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=61479 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=43169 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=66484 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=53199 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=73908 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=54351 anyway, if youd like to help, please sign this petition. heres a little something on the matter i received from heiko:
In reply to: Hey Rasto, I just got this msg from a girl in the US. Maybe you want to include the text in your posting to the "Access Issues" forum. Ciao, h. In reply to: hello heiko, You requested an english translation from folks at val di mello, i contacted a friend from the area. Below is the summary he sent me. Perhaps you can get it posted on the main page rather than just the euro section?? "Val di Mello is a great little valley in the middle of the Alps. Back in the sixties and seventies the wind of the new climbing era coming from Yosemite valley found its ideal echo on our beautiful granite walls. In this tiny paradise the most talented and intelligent climbers came to find nature, adventure and exploration. Today people from all around the world come here not only to climb, but also to enjoy the beautiful rivers, meadows, and waterfalls. Here you can still buy milk from local shepherds, enjoy camping and contemplating in nature. A great danger is now threatening this exquisite piece of land that until now, has been spared from property speculation, dams and roads. An electric company is trying to get licenses to build a hydroelectric plant that would suck the water from all the streams, thereby supporting persons that don’t live locally and taking away the only thing locals have: the beauty of their land. Avoiding this shame is not only a matter of good sense and dignity. It would send a strong and clear NO to those that would speculate to steal the beauty of nature and a wealth of biodiversity from todays and future generations, all for a handful of money. " If you would like to support the preservation of Val di Mello's natural state, please click on the following link and add your name to the petition on their website: http://www.valdimello.it/v2/User/asp/Vdm.asp?a=52 a list of websites w/more info in english (& videos) has been compiled on our website at www.pgvip.net. Thanks!!

Folks, please help us out on this one. It would be fantastic to see some 'USA' signatures up there! VDM also has one of the largest bouldering gatherings in Europe each year - there is a video on the Petzl site if you're interested: http://en.petzl.com/...video/mellobloco.htm Thanks!! Taz

Signed though I am not quite sure what it 'sez. I'll trust that this was a petition to save a climbing area and not a petition to fill the place with water. Good luck guys.

I've climbed there a lot, and yes it is paradise! whether you climb or not. Therefore, I don't believe they are going to do it. What a landscape destruction that would be. Just the idea is totally crazy and insane. If they'd do it, a lot of good climbing would remain there nevertheless. Anyway, to protect the place it's worth chaining yourself to a piece of granite there. And I'd think a lot of people would stand tall to fight it.

What the sandwiching of the pictures says to me: "Hurry, sign up now or else the valley will be flooded and the hot italian chicks will have no place to boulder! Allez!"
