All route setters...HELP!!!

For those of you route setters/strippers that have used colored duct tape, you probably know that some of the colors just don't want to come off of the wall and require a spackle to get off. Does anybody know of a better way to get off this extra sticky tape?

Don't use colored duct tape...or if you must use it, fold a little flap of one end back on it's self, creating a little pull tab. Hide the tab under the hold so it doesn't snag on anything.

THanks for the advice, but i don't have a problem with getting the edge up. Some of the tape just likes to shred about halfway through and then won't come up unless i spackle it off. Idk, guess i'll just have to suck it up.

I wish I could answer your specific question of how to get tape residue off of a wall. Have you tried Goo Gone? If you come up with a good solution please post it for everyone's benefit.

Maybe you already have heard this, but gaffers tape seems like a great way to go instead of duct tape, though I've heard it is more expensive.

There is a discussion about various tapes here:

I've only had that problem when the hold (hence the tape) has been up too long. :P

Nail-polish remover should take it right off.

I've never had that problem, just the opposite, it comes off too soon. Are you using a textured wall or just a woodie?

I second the gaffer tape. Sticks well and comes off clean. I don't know if it costs extra, but whatever little it may be is certainly worth the effort and reduced sticky residue!

It's textured paint, and it's at a gym and my boss switched from gaffer(which i loved) to colored duct tape(not my favorite). It's a textured wall and the routes(and tape) stay up for around 3-5 months give or take. I'm the main stripper/setter so it's really when i feel like doing it. Haven't tried goo gone but i'll try nail polish remover. Just thought that i'd add that some of the colors stick and peel off well. Some peel off quickly, and some well, they just don't come off.

Gaffers tape isn't that much more expensive, it's just harder to find locally.

I've found that some colors are better than others. Do you have a section of wall you can test them on for a month or so before using them? The rolls that dont come off the wall right get used for things like signage, closing boxes, etc. ;)

I work at two climbing walls and for one we use bron tape http://www.brontapes.com/ while at the other we are moving to tape (from single-colored hold routes) and will also be using bron tape

just stick a little bit of it underneath the hold when you are tightening as it isnt nearly as sticky as normal duct tape

Powerhouse, see if you can talk the man in to going back towards Gaffers tape. It comes of clean, but most places that sell gaffers also sell "Spike Tape" it is the same adhesive as gaffers but comes in 1/2" widths and around 30 colors. Nice to be able to set lots without repeats or creative multicolor marks.

Gaffer's tape and Spike tape both hail from the theater world - Gaffer's being for electrical work like Sound and Lighting and Spike being for use on the stage itself to mark the locations of props and set pieces. Both should be readily available at any theater supply shop or online.

...and if you walk in the door of a professional theater with a roll of duct tape, you may be leaving inside of it!

I also like 3m Adhesive Remover for the really stubborn tape residue. But it should only be used where no-one has to smell it...

You can also just hack away at it with your thumb nail. This is rather cheap too. Also switch tape dude.
