In reply to: Alcohol is legal, hence widespread use. Marijuana is not, hence not widespread. Think for a second, if marijuana is legalized, wouldn't it cause as much problem as alcohol when abused? I do think that marijuana, if legal, would not cause as many problems as alcohol when abused. Marijuana is less likely to cause physical dependence or long term health consequences. People who binge drink can die from alcohol poisoning but you don't OD from marijuana. In addition, the rate of violence is higher for those intoxicated on alcohol as opposed to THC. I do think we should have laws restricting the use of motorized vehicle when high, but I don't understand why marijuana is illegal. If marijuana was legal, and if my kids (when they are older) felt compelled to experience getting drunk or getting high, I feel they would be safer getting high...But this is purely an academic discussion as I have no first hand experience or knowledge. Maybe I should do some research abroad so I can do a better job of imparting my wisdom to my offspring! -wolfemom...who has found bagels to be a performance enhancing climbing drug

my 2 cents based on experience: liquid oxygen - brought it with me to take on my first mtn climb - Rainer. The chemist in our group swore it wouldn't do me any good so I never used it and got my $100 back. (if you do buy it and try it, make sure you get a money back guarantee!) ginkgo biloba - i started using it 8 weeks prior to my Rainier climb. No altitude sickness, but i drank tons of water and acclimated very slowly (3 day climb) so I have no idea, but IMO, why not try it? beer - was in the gym and left to have a beer with some friends, then came back. I climbed a grade higher than I ever have and had so much fun doing it. tried it again on another occasion, but this time had the beer before going into the gym. it backfired. never climbed worse. coffee - i'm a 3 cup a day coffee drinker. I scale back to 1 cup a day several weeks before a climb, then have a cup of coffee each morning and add coffee to my cereal for breakfast. Always have excederin, or expresso beans, or caffeine pills with me for lunch. this works like a charm - like giving caffeine to a baby... nicotine patch - oh yeah........ i was a smoker and quit with the help of these and had a bunch left over. used to wear them when I was climbing with guys that were 20 years younger than me. It never did help me keep up with them on the long approaches, but the patches sure helped me to follow anything they could lead. I also think it helped me to stay up late with them, and get up early and be packed and ready to climb before they were. Ritalyn - i have no personal experience with this, I just witnessed how lively and energetic and good my girlfriend was when she took it one morning before we went climbing. WOW! That's one drug I would certainly consider on a long climb like Rainier, Quandry Peak, Pisco, even hiking into longs.. HA! or anytime I'm climbing with my 20-year-my-junior friends... :-) Diamox - Took it at high altitude for a splitting headache I had when waking up on the mtn. Found out I was allergic to it. Had the headache again on another mtn but this time didn't take anything, just got up and had some real strong coffee.. and then I was fine.

Well, I guess I'm the consummate wet blanket. My personal opinion is that one should rely on one's own strength, skill, and determination to get to the top of a route. If you're relying on things other than that, isn't that essentially cheating yourself out of a personal victory? If you want to "give yourself every advantage," or whatever, it's your life. I've never done anything stoned, or drunk, or even using caffeine (what, it keeps me up at night, and I can't get properly rested  ). Anyhoo, I'll always mutter under my breath when I see a bunch of drunk climbers, but that's my couple of pennies. Have a very lovely day.

All the stuff used in other sports would help in climbing as well. EPO, Growth Hormone, and Testosterone being the most common. Whether you are a boulderer, trad guy, or mountaineer, they would all help you. Of course.. they could all kill you to... which is why they are banned. Oh and if you really want to make sure that you beat the drug testers, they can't detect blood doping if you dope with your own blood and EPO clears the system in just a few days.. but it's positive effects last for up to 6 months. Other things out ther that are "legal" and can benefit performance include the use of a hypoxic tent to simulate "live high" and "train low", creatine (be careful on the type and dosage, as well as your personal reaction to it), and stimulants such as caffiene and ephedrine. There is also *some* indications that supplementation with ZMA (Zinc, Magnesium, B6) will help you recover better, sleep better and naturally stimulate testosterone production.. and um.. increase your libido.

wow, impressive! hmmm drugs i've used. nurofen for the pain, deep heat/antiflamme creams (for tender forearm muscles), tapes for cuts and shite (hey, u buy em from a drugstore so they could be callec drugs). i've also had favourable results from BZP party pills (energy ones, not hallucinatory ones) to give me more energy. and guarana and caffeine in large quantities always helps.

I peronslly drink beer and have smoked pot, but when it comes to climbing I never go if I,m under the influence of anything other than O2. Anybody who wants to climb with me had better not be under the influence of anything either. If they are they can stay home. Sorry. Tim

Whoa, adding coffee to cereal? Is it hot or cold? (by far the most interesting thing I've heard in this conversation)

In reply to: Marijuana is less likely to cause physical dependence or long term health consequences. I'm sure some can argue the merits of this claim, but I don't want to go there. Its not my job to convince other people of the problems associated with taking "recreational drugs", if you don't see the problem then I think all hope is lost. If you care enough to find out, Google is one click away.

Then you'll see what widespread use of drugs could do to a community, or a country. Currently some 3rd world countries are groping with this problem, I'm sure you can find references to it. You still don't think marijuana is harmful? Well, I'm sure you'll like living in a country full of bumbling carefree people, who just don't care much about anything else but getting high. Wait, that sounds like your average high school kid, doesn't it?

I've got a question about the use of Viagra in high altitude. I did hear the stories on how Viagra was conceived, but has it ever been certified for its original purpose? I mean the test did get sidetracked when they found out that the test subjects got a major boner, didn't it? :)

Pfizer was looking for a drug that would relax coronary arteries to relieve chest pain. They were looking at a number of PDE5 (phosphodiesterase) inhibitors, of which sildenafil made it into the clinic. PDE5 inhibitors raise cGMP levels which, in turn, elevates nitric oxide. The effectiveness on a given tissue depends on the abundance of this enzyme in that tissue relative to other phosphodiesterases. Apparently it is a significant player in pulmonary tissue.

yeah, id be livid if my partner was drunk, high or the like, and just cuz those of you who do it think it makes you climb better it really doesnt pot never helped me or anyone else, just makes those who do it think "whoa I'm climbing great today!" but really arnt, unless they are nervous to be climbing when they are sober which i wouldnt want to climb with them anywayz. however when i train and workout i do supplement and i have found that for muscle recovery and energy i take muscle milk and L glutamine, i get tons of energy for my workouts and quick recovery times, also if you arnt concerned with quick recovery i take a nitic oxide transducer which keeps the pump going on long after your workout thuse giving you more workout. there also is tribulous which is bout as close to roids but isnt a shot just an herbal supplememtn that tells your body to make tons more testosterone. good luck and do some research and youll find some supps that work for what you want.
