I have a chance to buy an older (1996) A5 single in near-perfect condition. Since all newer ledges have six straps, I was wondering if the four-strap system turned out to be a weakness? Does anyone know any definite cons to this four-strap model? The price, with fly, would be @ 400 bucks and I would be using it a couple times a year.

For that price you could have straps added onto it if needed.

I'd carefully check the condition of the nylon straps and ask how it was stored. In a cool, dry closet? Should be fine for service. In a hot garage or sometimes exposed to the sun? The straps might be a little crispy. The number of staps should be just fine -- they built 'em that way for a lot of years. The additional straps in the middle which are common for most new ledges are great for extra tensioning and support, but you can make it without them. I'd also verify the condition of the fly. 10 y/o seam sealing does hold up very well, so expect to at least put a bunch on the seams yourself. I'm thinking $400 is a little high for a ledge that old, regardless of condition. Offer him $300 and see what he says. Contact Russ at fishproducts.com if it needs to be serviced or repaired. Ed

fwiw- I scored a new older design single A5 w/fly for $250 and see them go on the net for that price about once every other month. The 4-pont desgn is tippier, but feels roomier...so it is a trade-off.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with Lambone. I bought one earlier this year for $250 off ebay. 250-300 is the going rate. Has anyone put a pole in one of these?
