I am coming over from England to Yosemite in September, and have been told that there is a camping ground at El Portal, but I find no mention of it on the web. Any info Any one?

There's a large pullout on the left, about 2 miles past El Portal (as you head out of the valley) that a lot of climbers crash at. There's a large earthen divider that separates it from the main road, so it's not bad. After gas, it costs about the same as Camp 4, but less hassle. I believe there's a sign saying no camping, although I've seen cops sit there in the morning hunting speeders and not bothering any campers, and the road crews haven't been known to bother people either. That may be the place you heard about.

Also, there is a pay campground across the river from there; not sure how much it costs. Those are the only camping options I've seen around El Portal; I sometimes stay at the pullout. We stayed there for three weeks a while back with no hassles.
