Does the water damage your shoes at all? I have seen clips where people have chalk. How do you keep it dry?

I water solo in an old, ratty pair of shoes and I don't use chalk. There is no way to keep it dry. The guys you see with chalk in vids and photos have several dry sacks of it waiting in the wings.
