I don't know if this is just a personal problem or not, but I have a lot of trouble trying to get the homepage to come up. Usually it's just the top bar with the titles and sometimes the ads that pop up, but very rarely does all of the front page come up. I have no problems loading any other web page that I have seen, nor do I have any problem loading any other pages on rc.com. Anyone know anything about this problem or am I alone? Oh, also when it does load it is very fast (my computer is pretty new), so I don't think it wud help if I just waited and that my computer is slow. Edit: Added some more info

Happens to me too every now and then. Sometimes it works after waiting a minute and then reloading, but yesterday I couldn't view the site for the whole day.

Yep, happens quite a bit for me too. Sometimes just closing down the site and coming back to it works, but yesterday I couldn't get on the site all day!

I think we are the guinea pigs for the new, two tiered Internet where you have to pay more for a faster connection. I will vouch that it is slower over here. CM

I think it is something specific to the home page because if you pick off the top menu when the page hasn't totally loaded, those pages work fine. It happens to me about 75% of the time. Seldom bother anymore because of the problem. It even happens when returning after reading a thread.

Yeah I kinda think that it is specific to the homepage too. I have a pretty speedy connection so i guess that makes me on the upper tier, but it still just won't load for me. I'm glad it's not just my problem, but I wish i had soem ideas to fix it? Anyone?

I've noticed this problem as well. I'm resurrecting this thread because it has been impossible for me to get the main page to load for the last several days. When things are going "well" I can usually get the home page to load about 25% of the time -- so I'm still seeing a 75% failure rate. The problem has continued to get worse with time. To cut down on my number of failures, I've just stopped coming here so often. It continues to fail at the same rate, but it fails less often

Anson is working on the problem as we speak. If you do get the FP to load you may notice that some of the features will come and go as he troubleshoots that problem. Hopefully he will get to the bottom of this problem.

Kudos to all of you. I know you're already swamped trying to get the new site put together, and you don't need constant pestering from everybody about bugs in the current site.

This might be coincidental, but I find that I have the most trouble getting here when I'm already on a page with animated gifs or flash, the connection times out, but when I'm coming from a page without little banners and whatnot, the front page loads no problem...usually. For what it's worth, probably not much.

I am still having huge issues. All day long I'm seeing a "gateway timeout" on about 70% of my attempted page loads. This is happening everywhere (not just the page loads). Even when I try to slap a trophy on a post, I'm getting these timeouts.

One of the front-end webservers took a dive sometime earlier today, so the website was operating at half of its usual capacity (under all of its usual load) for a while. I called in a powercycle and now that the machine is back up, things seem to be back to normal. The homepage fix seems to have addressed *that* particular problem. This was a hardware issue -- when you run on cheap hardware, sometimes a machine crashes for odd reasons. It seems like one of the drives in the RAID array failed, but for whatever reason, not badly enough to kick it out of the array. Like I said, sometimes you get what you pay for. Before any 'IT guys' go mouthing off, I'd like to point out that this is identical to Google's strategy -- use redundant cheap crap. Our budget happens to be slightly smaller than theirs; nonetheless, we've never been ones to sacrifice profits for quality ;-)

In reply to: If you do get the FP to load you may notice that some of the features will come and go as he troubleshoots that problem. Specifically, at the moment, the Climbing.com news section. I do want to point out that the component is not missing because Climbing.com is doing anything wrong, or that their server performance is in any way affecting ours. What has happened is that I grabbed the closest, cheapest (free) solution for getting their news to show up on our server, and (surprise surprise) it wasn't strong enough for the kind of load that you all put on our RAAH (redundant array of ancient hardware). So I am backing that particular feature out, and exploring other avenues for implementation. Again, the problem is on THIS SIDE. Those who find themselves jonesing for Climbing.com hot flashes while I figure this out can find them at: http://www.climbing.com/news/hotflashes/ -aB

If I can add something, without mouthing off. The problem is not new, it has existed for several months, minimum. I would say that for me, it is a 50/50 crap-shoot as to the homepage loading. Often, I have to manually kill the process because your server won't let go. I believe that many users endure this problem since I have found it to occur on different machines in various locations across the country. From the queries I have done, I suspect that it is a hardware issue, not coding. If I can provide assistance..... anything to improve the site. Thanks, -Jeff

Thank you very much for replying Phil. I know it must be very difficult to run a site so big and in my opinion you all are doing a great job. Just glad to know that it is not a personal problem.
