So, I was looking at some fruit boots and wondered...

those of you that use them, how do you pack them in???

Strap on the outside?
Some sort of jumbo crampon pouch??
Hike in with them on???

I don't own a pair my self, or use them much for that matter, but have climbed with many who do.

What I have seen most do is strap one to either side of the pack. Some packs have a large enough crampon poutch to fit smaller friut boots. I haven't seen to many people stuffing them in their pack, but those I have seen do this have had a section of burlap to wrap them in.

Short approaches, by all means wear them. Lots of others do.

Heh, never heard that before, for climbing anyway... are you speaking of just regular crampons, or a special type?

When I used to skateboard that’s how we referred to Rollerbladers. But somehow rolling around jumping in the air and grabbing your foot seems a lot gayer than strapping a bunch of spikes to your boots. Bladers still hold the title in my eyes.

You need those rubber point protectors on the fruit boots, then wrap the pair up in a foam pad burrito style, put them in your pack otherwise they can fall off the pack ($!) or they get very cold.

I don't think you need the ruber point protectors, but this did remind me of what an old climbing partner used to do on cold days with longer aproaches where he would carry them in. He used a section of blue foamy (the ones you slept on in scouts) and made a poutch duck taped at the sides (burrito like as chacal said). He then would either put a 1L nalgine bottle full of hot water in with them, or two 1/2L bottles in the boots. This insured they were warm when he put them on and as a bonus he never had problems with his water freezing (well almost never).

Water bottles packaged up with un-sheathed fruit boots? What the Sam Hill are you thinking? The points are going straight into everything including the water bottle, your down coat etc. then they're going to emerge out the side of you pack and take off you partner's eyebrow.

Bloody hell, do I have to explain everything?

i've never used crampons before, so this may be dumb- but what does it matter if they get cold? aren't they going to get cold as soon as you have them on your boots anyways?

dead

p.s. brent- that drawing is awful, (but good idea). it makes me twist my head ALOT to try to orient what part is climber and what part is rock.
