Very interesting lens design.

With 3 modern Pancakes in the linup (21mm, 43mm and 70mm) the 70mm is the most intriguing.

To be able to compress a 105mm f2.4 lens into this:

Is pretty amazing. Optically the other pancakes have been very good so if this holds par this really makes those big bulky 2.8 105mm go to shame.

I know big heavy lenses "look" professional, but small lenses get used and don't feel like an albatros.

The 21, 43, 70 combo would make for a unique, unobtrusive and lightweight travel setup with superior sharpness to a equiv zoom and faster max aperatures.

Whats interesting is I only learned about the 70mm pancake on a Nikon forum. Seems people are picking up inexpensive 6MP pentax bodies to use the pancake and limited system on as a lightweight travel setup.

If you have the money this makes a lot of sense. A K100D with on camera shake reduction and the three pancakes is about $2000. Or the same as a 6MP body (with 1/10th the features) in 2002.

The more I think about this the more sense it makes. Niche markets. You want pancakes, you need to get an extra system. Expand in ways you can, not by direct competition with your competitor. At least not initially. Overall a good strategy.

I definitely agree that pancakes would be ultra-practical for many reasons, especially if you're used to using primes anyways. Maybe it'll catch on and the big manufacturers will start making some slim lenses of their own too, one can dream!

Now they just need to make a 400mm f2.8 or a 600 f4 for sports shooting the size of a normal 50mm.

I could just imagine that, shooting a football game or something sitting next to a guy with a 400mm looking over and saying "so you're shooting with a 50mm?" reply: "nope this is a 600 f4" haha the look on that guys face would be priceless.
