My wife and I are moving to Buenos Aires tomorrow for a 9-month vacation. We've been climbing about a year and are in the 5.7-5.9 range for leading. (We'll try anything on toprope). We plan on taking climbing trips all over South America, but will be mostly in Buenos Aires for the first month learning spanish.

We'd like to get together with some local climbers, find a good gym, etc

Anyone interested, drop us a line.

Mark (and Deanna)

there is a good gym: realization, near the "malabia" subway stop. there are others as well.

you'll meet quite a few climbers in BA.
if you have trad gear, you'll mostly want to climb at Los Arenales outside of Mendoza, or Los Gigantes, near Cordoba.

check this thread.

Another good Gym in Acasuso/San Isidro is Escalando (Peru Beach and the River).
Near Bs.As. (aprox, 400 kms.) and good for top rope during a weekend, is Barker. You could also try Tandil.
La Ola (800 kms) could be visited, as well in Cordoba (not as good as Gigantes). Both require at least a long weekend
Arenales is 1200 kms. from Bs.As., not as easy as the aforementioned to get to, but as they say it’s a little Yosemite.
For all these places you could buy topos.
Climbing shops in BsAs: Ecrin, Rupal, Fugate, etc. (all have web sites). Bring your gear as everything costs al least 50% more.
Don’t forget to make Aconcagua by the Normal (with luck not more than 7 days climb), Lanin is easier and beautiful (3 days climb), etc.
Travel by bus (planes not cheap) or you could arrange climbing excursions with Realization, Escalando, Rupal (these three the best), Fugate (also very good), etc.
Don’t worry about meeting climbers. You will.
Enjoy your visit to Argentina
:D
