The composition of the first one is best, but he's under his bolt. The one where he's got the rope in his teeth is good but there's that piece of dead (?) plant or whatever in the background. PS it out... I won't tell anybody ;)

Oh, what sucks the most? How many tired comments you're gonna get about the bolted crack...

I like the first one because of the position the climber is in. You can see his face and he appears to be in the midst of a move. In addition, I really like the scenery behind him. I know it's the same scenery in all the pictures, but maybe something about the lines leading down, and converging because of the wide angle. Definitely my favorite out of the group.

lol... yeah, i figured i'd get crap for the bolted crack. somewhat ironic too, since i prefer trad to sport, but oh well, gotta take what shots i can... i was wishing i had gotten photos of other climbs too, but it didn't work out that way. thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.

The first one is the best IMO. It would have been nice to see it before the clip to the bolt.

#2 would be the Stem. It gives me the perception of climbing, along with the reach one, and shows that there is something going on other than standing.

Oh, and WTF is up with that bolted crack???

My vote also goes for #1... the composition is the best. But, I will say there's something about the expression on the climber's face in #5... I've been there!

thanks everyone. seems the going concensus is pic 1, for its composition. taking landscape shots in these situations seem to be a little harder for me -- i have to fight the urge to make the climber the center of the shot, which would make for a boring picture. definitely something to work on though... i also wish he were above the bolt as opposed to below it, as climbsomething mentioned. great comments from everyone... much appreciated!

framing of the first one, with the timing of the fourth one (rope in the mouth), than you have a winner

Yup, I've got to agree with most everyone here. #1 is my fav, composition looks good, colors look good, expose is right on. I think it's a cool shot even with the bolt already clipped.

I suppose #1 really is the best of the bunch. Still, I really like #3 - the stemming shot where the subject is looking towards his chalked right hand. I like this shot a lot for a number of reasons: 1 - the lines of the shot are very nice; 2 - the look of concentration on his face is excellent and clearly readable; 3 - the feel of a climber in a tenuous stem is palpable because you can see his position very well; 4 - I don't know how to explain it (or recreate it consistently in my shots) but the sense of space opening all around the climber is there, and it's key. Many good shots suffer because you can't feel the space around the climber, and you miss that sense of a lot of air!

Oh, and yeah, I cringe a little at the bolted crack, too. But that's okay. Shit happens. And anyway, all ethics are local ethics.
