In reply to: In reply to: I didn't press the issue ("then why wasn't it stamped") Why not? I would have. You are perfectly entitled to. Put bluntly CCH don't seem competent enough to warrant the implicit trust of their customers. Fair question. It's important to keep in mind that QC can help keep defective units from being shipped but doesn't magically make good units any better. CCH has been making Aliens for 10+ years. How many falls have Aliens held and how many problems have there been? Even before their testing they were putting out a good product and had the implicit trust of their customers. Given that they had a chink in their process recently I called because I wanted assurance that the controls put in place had been applied to my newest Aliens. After talking with the guy for a while I was satisfied with his response and saw no point in busting his balls. The answer wouldn't have changed my confidence in my Aliens or changed the way they're doing their jobs. I believed him when he said that my cams had been tested.
In reply to: However, since it is obvious that leavingne has some misgivings about the structural integrity of the cams and in particular the one that didn't have a stamp that verified it had been tensile tested, I would recommend they ring again for their own peace of mind. Obviously CCH don't quite have the new process down if they aren't stamping all the cams tested with the tensile tested stamp (I can't think of a reason why they deliberately would only mark some). The conversation I had was sufficient for me to not be apprehensive about the cam. The black Alien that just came in the mail yesterday is stamped 406, "U", and nothing else, and I am not concerned about the lack of "TT" -- as someone pointed out they have evolved their marking process.
In reply to: I got the impression that maybe this guy I talked to today had to take off his welding mask before answering the phone. In reply to: The guy at CCH to whom I spoke on the phone sounded fine to me. I didn't mean to make it sound like there was anything wrong with the guy I talked to, I just wanted to convey that I wasn't talking to a teenage temp who answered the phone, "Thank you for calling CCH, how may I help you today?". That's not a bad thing! enough jibber-jabbering, time to climb!

I called REI, where I bought my only Alien. I spoke with someone that didn't know what an Alien was and asked someone else. Then I am not completely sure if his response follows REI general policy. He said that as the Alien was on the dates of the recall, even if not dimpled, I could return it. I did. I am getting either a TCU or a C3 of similar size. Too much risk and too many doubts about quality. Not that I'd recommend to do the same, but fortunately I am not addicted enough to Aliens anyway.

I'm just gunna wait for my Fish Products patented Alien testing device. Meanwhile I'm still gunna use my old Aliens. My climbing bud and I have taken enough falls on em to know that most of them are fine. I still have confidence in the Aliens that I own and once I test them I will have even more confidence in them. Like I say I am still confident to climb on mine. Do feel free to use or not your own Aliens though. As in all trad gear you have to have confidence in your gear and of course the placement.

This is also the company that pull tested the Aliens pre-recall. I doubt there's a better retailer to work with, regarding issues with Aliens. Cheers, Jim

Cheers, Jim I do not want to to hijack this so I'll say this and let it die. True they did do the pull testing and I can't fault them for that, as it has brought many important issues to light and maybe their return policy has gotten better. I've had issues in the past with their policy and finally had it resolved after bypassing the store staff and contacting Paul Fish directly. But my experience has been different from yours and frankly I think their policy was/is poor. I'm glad your issues have been resolved so maybe I'll give them another try. Have Fun Be Safe. Fred

They have gone above and beyond already. FYI, I sent mine all in for testing at CCH except for the 2 that were already stamped. I'll sleep better, suggest you all do the same.

Update: FYI Shipped 19 Aliens out via UPS ground on 8/31/06. None of these had the test stamp on the swage and were all kinds of Mfg dates. They all had tags with my address and info on it. 18 came back with tags, 1 came back without a tag: all were stamped. Received back 9/13/06. ______________________________________________________ The one without the tag was a green one. I routinely do a route which has a green placement that, if I fell and it failed, would have horrible consequenses. It could very well be that the tag fell off. -or- In either case, nice to not be concerned. These are sweet little cams, now they are back home where they belong. Take care: Bill

I sent my cams in three weeks ago and I don't have them back yet. I tried to call CCH and email them without success. I was wondering if anyone else has been more than a week for turn around.

I was able to call them and get a tracking number though. You might consider keep on calling.

I was wondering if anyone else has been more than a week for turn around. I sent in 18 and it took just over 2 weeks - I think after the "everyone can send in to get tested" there were lots of billcoe and I out there sending in A LOT of aliens. Called and got Dave on the phone - he sounded exhausted and acknowledged they were beyond busy. He had one of the other shop guys call me back with a tracking # in 15 min - They were delivered that am so I arrived home to find all my aliens on my doorstep. (wide range of dates - I sent back anything I had that was +/- 6 months of the recall dates. My trusty 2002 series, which has seen many falls was still avail) Everyone had my tag on them and a tensile tested stamp on the collar. I'm back in full action now...

I sent a full set of Alien Regulars to CCH to be tested on 9/21 via fed ex ground. They arrived in Laramie 9/28 (per fed ex tracking) - I recieved them all stamped "tensile tested" on my doorstep 10/16. Just wanted to point something out to anyone sending their cams back to be tested... don't forget the travel time of the package before you call after a week and a half wondering where your cams are. Considering it took 7 days via fed ex ground to arrive at CCH and assuming it took the same amount of time to return ship - CCH must have had them for around 7 days. That's pretty good considering all of the cams that the had to test ALL WHILE dealing with the nightmare of the original recall as well as trying to run day-to-day operations. I, for one, am a fan of Aliens and will continue to support CCH.
