Ok, I am looking for somewhere to go for ice over the Thanksgiving holiday. Must be within driving distance of Tucson. Should be suitable for someone who has only climbed ice twice. I was thinking the Ouray Ice Park, but it does not open until mid December. Any ideas?

In reply to: Ok, I am looking for somewhere to go for ice over the Thanksgiving holiday. I will be so disappointed if you get on ice before I do this year. There might be some places in Utah. Though I don't have a clue where. Good luck redleg.

DEfinitely not within easy driving distance, but I believe the Dirtsicle in Price Canyon (between Provo and Price, Utah) is usually in on Thanksgiving. Joe's Valley should also be in (I think it's near Huntington, Ut, so you can mapquest that). It's gonna be a long drive though, I think. Maple canyon would be closer than Price Canyon, but it won't be in I wouldn't think.

I am used to long drives, so anything i can get to in one day of driving on each end works for me. Still leaves me two days to climb ice before the Chossmonkey. Surely, ice comes in in Canada first Choss?

There are reasons Western Canada is better that the east. For one we have mountains! Take today as an example. It's october, but Ic limbed Ice on Sunday and I walked to work in a short sleeved shirt this morning. It's great!

My buddy swung some tools last weekend. It was thin, but climbable. Things should be in full swing (pun intended) around here by Thanksgiving. Check out coldfear.com

As a former Tucsonan who made many a trip to CO to find ice I feel your pain. There should be quite a bit of stuff in in the Ouray area even though the ice park is not open. Depending on the snow pack this is also a good time to check out some of the routes that are usually too avalanche prone later in the season. Conditions reports should start appearing on sites soon: http://www.skywardmountaineering.com/current.html http://www.jackrobertsclimbing.com/icecond.html http://www.mountainproject.com/...05708956&filter=COND If you are willing to venture further you could check out Mt Lincoln or RMNP but they are likely to be jammed with climbers. Definitely post on mountainproject.com as well. That seems to be the best source for info on ice in CO. George

there are a few good climbs in now in the ouray/silverton area. will be many more by thanksgiving. the eureka area will be pretty well formed up by then. right now there are some good routes in good condition in south mineral creek. although, the best one is gonna have pretty high avy danger soon and will be pretty risky for the rest the season. if you are looking for partners, let me know. can't promise too much. i've torn my rotator cuff and should be climbing easy ice (WI4) around then.

Mt. Lemmon has The Stain. It has not formed for several years though. Plus the approach is a real bitch.
