Can't believe they suspended my license!
Can't Post

So I found out about this a couple of weeks ago. I guess they suspended my drivers license because I hit my head pretty badly when I had my accident. And some doctor who didn't take enough time to actually see how I was doing decided to suspend my license.

What the hell gives them the right to do that? They didn't even take the time to see if I would have any problems with driving. In fact I had every thing checked out at the third hospital I ended up in, and things were fine (vision tests, cognitive tests, etc).

Why the hell did they put me through all those tests in the first place? I guess those don't count and i have to go through them again with a neurologist.

Speaking of which, I finally got the appointment booked for the neurologist...the 20th of December! I was flying from Ontario to Nova Scotia for Christmas, how the hell is this going to work!

So 2.5 months after my accident they decided to suspend my license, can't get into a neurologist till 5 months after my accident, and it can take another two months after the doctor sends all my stuff to the Ministry to get my license reinstated.

7 months because a fucking doctor couldn't spend a few minutes with me to see how I really was. Fucking system.

Depends on your local laws, but some US states have a mandatory license suspension if you have head trauma and a loss of consciousness. It's a safety precaution.... to let someone who has had recent head injury drive again would put others at risk.

Why don't you ask them?

Maybe you could reschedule?

Well, at least you didn't have to pay for it, right?

Good point - there are poor people in America who would love that level of service - without having a fundraiser.

wasn't thinking about them specifically, but sure.

Or else there could be a more local solution a few elections away.

Sorry to hear that granite_grrl, and yeah it sucks and I'd be furious too. But you're blaming the wrong person in this case.... I honestly wish I had the power as a doctor to suspend licenses (frickin' Calgary drivers, road rage at me will ya), but no, that responsibility belongs to the licensing authority.

In Ontario, doctors are legally required to report you to the Ministry of Transport if you have a medical condition that may impact your ability to drive, and honestly I can't fault your doctor for doing that in your case... if you got in a car accident and killed someone or hurt yourself, they could be sued. In Alberta, I'm not required to report anyone (we're just supposed to tell them that they're personally supposed to report themselves), but I do get these annoying fitness to drive forms from patients over the age of 75 and for medicolegal reasons, I tell them all that I'm a doctor, not a driving examiner and in any case, what's the relevance of function in an office setting to driving? So everyone gets referred back to the licensing body and they can make the call since that's their job. Not mine.

After a doctor notifies the ministry of transport in Ontario, there is a special committee that reviews your file, and then makes the final decision... the ministry committee usually contacts the patient and asks for specialist reports, test results, etc. before making the final decision (sounds like they did not do this with your case).

If you had all the tests done previously, get copies and appeal the decision now rather than waiting to be seen by the neurologist in December.

So thats at least a couple more months with one less woman driver out on the roads? Yeah, I'm not seeing the problem here. Maybe I need to re-read the OP.

youre gonna get it now

anyway, that sucks. but, like others said, in such cases its usually better to err on the side of caution. think how much it would suck for the doctors if they patched you up and you died the next day because you didnt see that tree jumping onto the road??

yup, driving through the city is maddening. Little q-tips sitting in the driver's seat, trying to navigate the IHOP parking lot in time for the whirly bird special.

It is more than just Kelowna..... it is the whole Okanagan Valley.

I think if they could find that monster in the lake, they would give her a drivers license too.

So last night I was just generally angry. I was angry at the doctor, but it was his legal obligation to report my accident. I could be laying unconscious and he may never have talked to me (still don't know which doctor reported me), but he still had to report me. So I guess I can't be angry at the doctor.

Its the way that its set up that has me pissed off. Why they have to report me regardless of how I'm actually doing, why they aren't required to do some tests before they report me. I understand a doctor is a busy person and maybe they have way more important things to do, so again I can't blame them that they didn't take the time with me.

It also pissed me off that they didn't send me the notice right away. It would have been nice to have gotten all of this taken care of earlier.

I got the neurologist appointment changed, took me a few hours to actually get through to their office, but they actually got me in next week, which is surprising! So we'll see how that actually goes.

and then the small print

"may or may not cause brain damage"

I reread my earlier post and I'm sorry it didn't come across as more sympathetic. I think the situation in Ontario sucks, because it essentially boils down to the government asking doctors to do something which they shouldn't be having to do. Personally, I find it unethical and illogical for all the reasons you mentioned.

I think whichever doctor reported you could have at least had the decency to communicate that to you rather than leaving you to get a nasty surprise in the mail.

Good luck getting your license back though...
