The new powers? Aren't those the guys who said "Let them eat cake"?

I don't wanna eat cake. I WANT embedded images.

I hope there can be discussion about this.

Performance? Only for images hosted on rc.com. People putting photos on photobucket or the like will not impact rc.com performance. You could filter out rc.com inline images if you feel that that's important.

Stealing bandwidth? A rule about it should be in the terms of use; that's all.

I find this change strange for a site that focuses on trip reports, discussions of techniques (imagine the sliding-x thread without pictures), sale of used equipment, etc. The useless-blabber threads won't be harmed, though.

Thanks to all who helped with the new site, BTW.

I also miss that funcionality, but consider that the vast majority of embedded photos on RC.com are actually thefts of other sites' bandwidth.

And to anybody who feels that the first day is enough to warrant you leaving and not coming back... b-bye. The performance is far superior, there are a lot of new things to explore and we were all warned that this is very much a process, not a one-time switch and BAM done -- on to the next project. So, leave if you must. Best of luck.

To tell you the truth Jay, I am VERY disappointed.

I feel like you lied to us in your 10,000 post thread. This new site isn't at all like you said.(would insert smily here but they are all the same and none fit what I want).

I'm not saying I'll leave this site and never return, but I don't think I will be spending/wasting much of my time here either.

This site does have a lot of nice new features, but as they are they will NEVER make up for the shortcomings of the new site.

Its hard to believe in one weekend they took all of the fun out of this site and called it progress.

I find it odd that only those who have had a hand it it feel that it is a better site. Technically it probably is. But in reality technicallities aren't what made the old site what it was. To me this new site is just like everyother site on the web.

This new site while it might work better from a computer standpoint, just doesn't work as well from a human standpoint.

no trophy for you, cos there are no more to give...

the thought crossed my mind that the performance issues of the old site are being fixed by driving most of the users away, increasing per-user-available-bandwidth for the ones who do stick around.

Another vote for imbedded photos.
Especially in the TR's. I mean, come on, TR's actually provide MORE information with photos than without.
Listen to us, Owners and Moderators. This is clearly a service your users want - it would be smart to allow it.

I have nothing new to contribute, other than my voicre saying that I also think that the nature of this site NEEDS the ability to embed images.

Imbedding photos was one thing that was great. If you couldn't convey in words how something ought to have looked then you could quickly draw something up or snap a pic of it and save it to your favorite image hosting page, where you could quickly post it. I did this numerous times all in the time span of 10 or so minutes. It would get the point across, quickly.

I haven't submitted any pics today, so I don't know if the functionality of approval and what not are the same or if it is instantainious. Threads such as the sliding-X and the best and the worst aren't going to have the same feel to them. Functionality gained, functionality lost??????????????

I don't know if trip reports would be considered "Article" worthy either... To me an article is something that is well researched and is written very well. Some of them, including mine, are not article worthy in my opinion.

*Sigh* It is still day one.... Will wait to see what happens.

I'd like this thread not to be hijacked.

The question is not whether someone should leave or not.

The question is whether embedded images are an important part of the "look and feel" of the site? If they are, then a way to accomidate that should be addressed.

Trip reports;
Photo Crit.;
HoldPlease2's report on blowing out all the screamers on Tribal.;
All of Dr Pitons diagrams;
Not to mention all the fun and wonderful stuff that's now gone.

You can click through, but it's not the same as reading the text and looking at the photos.

So let's get off our defensive horses and find out if this is really a loss. And if it is find a way to bring it back in a reasonable way.

Best, Kim

I've drifted more towards other sites over the past year as RC went downhill, just checked in today to see how things looked -- much worse, I'm afraid, without the pictures. Was taking them away really planned as a "feature"? Call it a bug and fix it quick, don't take credit for that bad decision.

Oh, I agree it's a loss! I'd like to see embedded photos brought back, too.

But I'd also really love to see people give RC.com a chance to make this a process, like they said it would be, rather than taking a glance and throwing a fit. I apologize for the mini hijack, though.

J_ung,

I'm glad you agree that embedded pictures is an important part of the site.

Frankly, I think the site is pretty good. I've been through these sort of migrations myself - even done them - and considering how few problems there are it pretty remarkable. That said, I don't want to hijack my own thread. So back on topic.

Best, Kim

Wow the inline photos show up in previews but I guess not in the real thread. And you have to upload them as attachments kind of lame. change it back.

I'd like to illustrate how one of my minimalist TRs would be without image embedding...

Here's the face as we hiked up.....

Here's me pulling the first buldge.....

And finally we took a break at the top to take in this marvelous view....

- yeah, for those of us that are entirely visually oriented... it will be very very sad if we can't eventually embed pics hosted elsewhere. Also, isn't that the point of places like PhotoBucket? Image hosting for the sake of image hosting? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Dude, face it, they have banned pics practically everywhere on the new RC. You can post pictures, but you can't use them.

Bye bye amazing TRs with lots of pictures, bye bye The Spandex Challenge, bye bye most of what made RC colorful and exciting.

Bandwidth theft? This is the web... if you don't want your stuff hyperlinked, don't post it or configure your server accordingly.
