i remember recently reading a review of the new mammut liquid chalk in rock&ice i think. seems to be the shiznit. was wondering if any of you tried it yet or know where i can purchase it. it seems like the only way to purchase it online are from european retail sites. for those of you that have tried it, any opinions?

I have tried the liquid fusion chalk, not bad for a good effective base coat of hands but the bottle nozzle clogs up with dried chalk. Semms like shit, a mess if you drop the container but sort of worth it. Chalk after tying in and racking up.

maybe i should clarify. i'm not actually new to liquid chalk, i like the stuff as a base coat in addition to using powdered chalk. however, some brands that i've used aren't that great, which explains why i'm interested in trying out mammut's version considering its good review in R&I.

i use beal liquid chalk on occasion (it was a bday gift) and its a pretty good base coat. if its cold enough it usually lasts the whole route and you can definitely get to a good rest before having to chalk up during the summer.

In reply to: what is the advantage of liquid chalk? Liquid chalk is a sespention of chalk in a solvent, normally isopropanol (IPA, aka rubbing alcohol). You can easily make it yourself. 1/2-3/4 fill a squirt bottle with powdered chalk (the finer the better) and top up with IPA, shalk and serve. The advantage to liquid chalk is the alchol is the intial dring agent to get rid of the nasty sweet in your greasy little plams. This evaporates and coevaporates any water with it. When you first put it on it feels slimy and you think what have I done. The IPA then will evaporate and leave chalk on your hands. This is especially good as it tends to carry the chalk into the lines and creveses of your hand. With liquid chalk you'll stay drier for longer before rechalking. Very nice for bouldering. Limited for longer stuff. Effectivly useless for multipitch.
