well...this was a bit inspired by Copperheads "how to make a Copperhead..."
my time is limited (just over a month) at the BCIT Machine Shop, but i have no more projects to make
and i don't know if my next shop i'll be working at will have tempering and hardness ovens (let alone surface grinders)
my first step is to make a universal fixture (or multiples) to be mounted on a surface grinder to hold hooks, beaks, peckers, mallards, knifeblades, bugaboos, etc at an angle to be ground into blades
(Video made by me while I was grinding square/parallel/to size two sets of 'parallels' as a school project, these are precision tools now in my tool chest)
i plan to also make fixtures for holding and bending hooks at different diameters..
and whatever time i have left, pump out some hooks and micropins....rough cut them, drill em, harden, temper, and ground them
that and i still want to make some more tools...(afew tapered mandrels, hardened and ground center stubs, tapping square, etc)
my friend who works at a wire rope company will swage everything for me

i'm curious if anyone else out there is a machinist/tool n' die tech/millright and what are your experiences with making gear
those of you that dont already know, i've been making softgoods for about 3 years now (i have an article on making your own rope bag)....also chalks bags, california rolls, 'pon bags, ice rolls, bolt kits, rope buckets, slings, etc.....so i'm no stranger to homemade gear

I am in steel fabrication and have thought really hard about making a portaledge. That's about as far as it's gone, though. Having priced the materials and time, other than the "do it yourself" factor, it's not cost effective.
Now if someone really wanted to break the bank, titanium alloy and dyneema ripstop fabric would make an ultralight ledge...but two or three times the cost of a prefab.

ya....i use to do steel fab and welding....more for trucks and making bumpers than climbing....though, i'm still wanting to get afew chucks of Titanium so a welder i know can weld me some Ti pins, i hear they're the shiznit...that and some Ti hangers

afew other idea rolling around in the head (super easy) is to machine the lower portion of a kong fifi, making a stitch plate with a large hole on the top big enough for a biner (attempts for an adjustable daisy....simpler than a webbing type by metolious, petzl or yates)

I have just made ( with the help of my grandmother at the beggining) bags, bibby sack, and a tarptent. I made my own portaledge too...and my"climbing seat"( I dont know the name in english
and the things i describe in the post copperheads.

If titanium pitons are good enough for Nanga Parbat...
The fifi idea sounds straight. I'm not into aid very heavy yet (if ever), but it's tough for sure.

but lets give it a try!
I used PVC , pvc ciment and primer.
6 90° elbow connectors
2 45° elbow connectors
clothnylon
shockcord
cordura
polyester thread..
pacience and help from my grandmother.
The easiest part is make the frame.
Cut the ends and be sure they dont cut you...soften every sharpen thing with a sand paper ( i llok it up at the dictionari...papel de lija...).
Connect the pieces with the conectors and ciment them
fter this is done the diffuculies start-
man i cant explain it... I will ask my girldfriend
her english is much better than mine, ok? maybe she will do it better

A buddy of mine machined his own Hand Drill, and made his own Portaledge, Rainfly and Haulbag.
He took it up the Pacific Ocean wall this summer and it was just as bomber as anything Fish or A5 makes.
His name is Brook and he sometimes posts on Supertopo.com and cascadeclimbers.com
