Im trying to get into mountaineering because climbing season is about over for me. Im in east TN and i have no idea where to go, or if there is even a place to go. So basically, can someone point me in the right direction for some mountaineering? it dosnt even have to be something hardcore, just something to get my feet wet(and cold)

Take the shelves out of your fridge, throw a bucket of water on yourself and sit inside of it for two hours.

Ha, ha just joking. Your best bet around there is some ice climbing. I have climbed some Ice in Virginia and it was okay. western NC is rumored to have decent ice. I've also heard of some at the New River Gorge.

move

moutaineering!!! in TN!!! season over!!

moutaineering is cool and all that, but SE winters are prime bouldering season, the season's not almost over, it just started! if you want to learn mountaineering save up some money and go out west or up north east in the winter.

just my opinion though, but if ya find a sick new alpine route up leconte or clingman's dome, call me, just better be in better style than me, done in a 1/2 day, onsite free solo and no piss breaks.

Pray for good (that is, bad) weather and buy the cheapest tools you can look at without laughing. In a "good" year, ice may for on Mt. Yonah, various North Carolina roadcuts, there are a few out-of-print guidebooks that address the subject and your best bet in my mind to find these is Charbon's Outfitters in Georgia. Don't shell out big money for tools or crampons because ice will likely not form. Be prepared to toprope; leading Souteast ice when it does form is a notoriously dangerous proposition. As a beginner I would not even consider it. I spent six years in Tennessee and four in Georgia myself, and I survived, but good luck!

You must have just moved here if you think there's such thing as a "climbing season" in east Tennessee! We climb T-Wall in t-shirts on all but the coldest days. The only place I generally don't go in the winter is Sunset.

hey i scoped a craZY new Alpine line up twin sisters it looks lika grade MCXL 5.47p R/X/NC-17/TV-M WI 12 M9+++ A15 climbing. i did it in 12 minutes naked with only my ipod blaring phish for guidence. #10 slung hex, but that was only to beat those boulders to death with.

btw, go to rocktown, its perfect. you will die waiting for perfect alpine conditions in tennesse. or better yet, wait, rocktown will be less crowed.

sorry, writing a term paper and not to happy about it
