Shouldn't even have to say it, but you shouldn't give puppies as presents generally. If you go together to the pound and find one, and the recipient/new owner is accepting responsibility but you pay for everything, that’s great, but otherwise no. You knew that of course.
I love my Bluetick/Red-bone cross. She is a retired hunting hound but has always had a great disposition and she's tough enough to stay out in the elements. I would stay away from the more hyper breads like most terriers or soft baby types like most bird dogs. Most any dog will work but it depends on your personal patience and experience.
Well, it all depends on how much time you two have to spend with the dog. If the dog is going to be crated 8+ hours a day--I personally say to NOT get a dog!!!
Things to consider when choosing a breed: -all the dogs in pounds that need homes -do you want a brand name dog -your time available -how active you are -how active you want your dog to be -do you have kids -should your dog be a protector of a home -if you leave you car unlocked at a Mexican restaurant does your dog have permission to bite the figers of a person trying to steal your rack -how much doggie socialization are you going to be able to offer -how big is your place -do you have a fenced yard
I could probably go on and on! The point being, dog breed should be something you research, not something you decide two weeks before xmas. This isn't a stuffed animal you know!!! I may sound harsh, but as others have mentioned...I hope you and the girl have discussed this in depth before you dive into doggie parenthood!

Dogs that are good "outdoor" dogs will need a lot of attention ...and I mean a LOT! so please keep that in mind.
(Note: Any dog requires a lot of attention)
If you are looking for a specify bread, the AKC, Working and Sportingbreads are general good "outdoor" type dogs. (Also please buy from a reputable breeder, not a pet shop.)
If specific bread does not matter to you, check a local rescue or if it does, check bread specific rescue.
We adopted a 1.5 year old yellow lab last year from a shelter. While yes, we didn't get the fun of a puppy stage (Believe me...I had enough fun with my other Lab who was 6 weeks when I got her) He was house broken, knew basic commands and really damn sweet. (and abandoned because he was "To Big")
Scout,Homer and I enjoy the outdoors as often as we can. They love to swim, run and do what they do best, retrieve.
Also keep in mind the rules about dogs in State and National Parks when bring your dog to the "outdoors".
Do bread research! While a puppy maybe "cute". The grow up to be dogs.

My Newfie couldn't be a better crag dog.. Loves the shade, so stays off the trails, no motivation, so doesn't jump on anyone or walk all over people's stuff, and she's not a real big barker..While she wouldn't save my rack from from being stolen from a mexican at a restaraunt.. I mean stolen from a mexican restaraunt.... you be hard pressed to find a better crag dog.. And I have found her slobber works very well as a lube on my cams!

Stolen "from" a mexican huh . . . For some reason I get the impression you "meant" something else. . .
Hmmm. . . Why don't you run over a Mexican on a bicycle??
'Cause It may be your bike!!!
Seriously I'm cool with racial "JOKES" Make 'em all the time but, I gotta say I PAID for my rack. If you didn't see the thief you really have no idea of their race do you. . .
Now if I mis-understood the racial connotations of your posts, well . . . My bad, otherwise use some discretion when you post in a public forum.
Shit Mexicans climb too . . . And whites steal. Can't we all just get a bong.
How do you think we got over the fence
