i was at barker dam a couple days ago myself, sitting in the parking lot with my buddy drinking some post climb beers and these two old ladies ask if we were climbing and then she says "You guys are crazy, I was a Psychologist for 20 years and I KNOW crazy"

I was at Cathedral Ledge one afternoon and was finishing the last pitch of recom-beast, where you top out right in front of the tourist observation area. There was a fair amount of people around and were a bit suprised when I pop over the edge. This sweet-looking old guy, at least 70s with a little hat and cane, watches me rig the anchor, looks me straight in the eye and goes "You're f***ing nuts."

There were two guys down at the local spot drinking PBR, bouldering, talking shit and generally being annoying when I walked around the corner just in time to hear... Random nOOb# 1 - "ATC's are retarded. I don't trust those things. Random nOOb# 2 - Yeah. GriGri's just make sense. It doesn't seem like the ATC holds the rope very well. Me - *FacePalm*

Years ago at Williamson Rock, I once heard a guy say to his friend, "At the gym they teach this convoluted belay technique where you always keep your hand on the rope." I posted it to rec.climbing, and it's kinda' gotten quoted all over the Web. Jay

I was at J-Tree back in March. There was a group next to us. The girl cleaning the climb yells up to her partner "Hold me tight while i work out this nut!" obviously taken in context it makes a lot of sense, but it certainly got everyone there laughing pretty hard.

I was climbing with my girlfriend one day when she brought her n00bish best friend. Someone mentioned that I had a much bigger rack than my GF, and the friend almost died in awkward laughter.

Love that this thread is still living... Last November, myself and 3 buddies were walking out of the canyon after just summiting "Cat in the Hat" in Red Rocks. Exhausted and bushwhacking our way through the manzinita my buddy "bumped" into two female hikers who were hideous to look at. Fannie packs, tanks tops that needed to cover way more than they were and pigtails. Anyway...A few seconds of stunned awkwardness and one of them blurted out, "Oh, are guys adventure climbing?" Sun stroked and mentally drained we all burst out laughing so hard, right in their face. I dropped my pack laughing and as they turned with disgusted looks on their faces and hiked around us all they could hear was the four of us hysterically laughing. WTF is Adventure Climbing!

Overseen at the crag: Easily less than 100 lbs, this child was lead belaying his father who easily weighed 180 lbs. Honestly, the kid was probably about 70 pounds. He was unanchored. There is, I suppose, an overheard to go along with it: "Oh, this gear all looks pretty good, I'm pretty sure!" I doubt the father had gone trad climbing more than twice before this.

I might have psoted this before on this site but what the hey, it fits. I had taken my girl on her first mutipitch, Solar Slab Gully at Red Rock. I was cooling my heels at the P3 belay for about 20 minutes as the rope didn't move much. I could hear her working on a piece, so it was obvious it wasn't an emergency. Finally, I yelled down to see if she was ok. She screams up at me "IM TRYING TO GET YOUR DAMNED NUTS OUT!!" Then we hear a climiber that was up on P2 or so of solar slab actual yell down at us "Wait , I'm coming back down, I wanna watch!" *laughter* Ah, climbing :)

I once overheard a poser say "it's a crash pad". I had to hold back tears of laughter.

A friend heard this one: from a new female climber to her male climbing partner. "I'm cold, I'm scared, and I NEED A POWER BELAY"

"Fear is always a factor when you blow a nut." One climber to another. "Why, I'm on the pill," the first climber's girlfriend said. Obviously she wasn't a climber.

Seriously heard in the gym: Yeah we did that too (partner check) when we started climbing, but we know we can trust each other When asked further they were very experienced climbers, well who isn't after half a year of climbing...
