Can anyone help??

Im starting a web based company, and am buying a .com.au domain, I have registered my business name, but cant decide which company to go through to:

-buy my domain name
- host my website through.

there are sooooo many options, and I am overwhelmed, as my knowledge is, admittedly limited.

My business will begin as a database for outdoor professionals, and grow from there.....

Anyone care to share a little internet intelligence with me??

Wink

Try to call and see if you can buy service from the Google. People seem to like them a lot these days.

I would try to find someone local. I prefer that, as I have had a couple of sit downs with my host to discuss packages, problems, etc.

If there isn't anyone local, I can reccomend a couple:

http://www.hostingrevolution.com
http://www.webserve.ca
And for domains:

take a look at this list and find the ones with "Australia" listed in the Country column. they'll be able to help you out with .com.au domain registration.

as far as hosting, ask around Aussie small biz sites. know any local climbing companies? just email and ask them for recommendations. larger sites are likely fully hosted (their own physical servers, etc) and you're just looking for disk space, bandwidth, and uptime.

when finding a host, don't forget to make sure that they allow scripts of the sort you're looking to have. maybe they support CGI scripting. maybe Microsoft's ASP. maybe Java solutions. and make sure they'll support a database, too.

if nothing else, the registrar will probably offer to do so...or they'll be able to recommend someone at the very least.

http://www.mediatemple.net/ - HIGHLY Recomended! EXCELLENT customer service and tech support. You can host unlimited domain names on the same server as well.

http://www.foing.com - Run by some friends of mine, not as good as Media Temple but they offer simple hosting with supurb customer service and support.

Hey thanks heaps guys!!
It will take me a while to look into these things Im sure, as all this is new to me - different scripts what?? lol.

My main thing will be needing a simple web design that allows people to input their own data, and different levels of login capabilities.

I feel this is looking to be a very frustrating hobby - but hopefully rewarding!!!

well, unless the form emails the data to you and you keep track of things by hand, you'll want a database-driven website. you'll need software written that will take the information people input and store them into the database (after some validation, perhaps?). you'll need software that will return the data as needed (either as "see all" or results from a search). you'll need software to perform the action of logging in.

what languages you use to write said software is up to you. Java, .NET, Perl, PHP, Ruby...you'll just need your host to support your choice. or you can find a host first and then let that dictate what language you'll use.
