Im trying to find a good steel carabiner for soloing with my grigri. I want something that is smallish, compared to most steel biners out there (example the size of a BD quicksilver would be great). But I dont want the hassle of maillon rapide. Does such a thing exist?

Yes they do exist but they're pretty hard to find. Look up one of the vertical rescue supply companies online and order from them.

If you're going to use something as weak as a rapide (most are weaker than aluminum carabiners) or a small steel 'biner (30kn), why even bother with steel?
Get a larger 45kn or 60kn steel 'biner instead. Or if you're so concerned about weight, use a DMM Belaymaster to reduce risk of crossloading.

In an ideal case, I would like to find a small steel biner that is 40+kN. Currently, I have a big ol steel biner with a few wraps of duct tape to help keep it from cross loading. Weight isnt the primary concern, I was just hoping to find something a little smaller that would keep the gri gri in tighter to my harness.

IMO, don't bother, assuming you're aid climbing (this is the aid forum, duh!)
You're going to need to use a backup system regardless of which biner you are using, so why not allow the redundancy of your b/u (knot/hitch/whatever) provide you the actual security you perceive you are getting by deciding to use a steel biner, without the extra weight?
DMM has some steel lockers, if you feel you must... Though you might want to ask yourself questions about the effect of crossloading on your GRIGRI if it is subjected to an irresistable force across an unbreakable object.

The idea behind a big biner is that the crossload strength is higher than a standard locker, so a 40kN locker might have a 15 kn crossload strength compared to 7or so on a standard locker. But like you say, anything above that 15 and would likely shatter my spine or something Im sure. As for redundancy, maybe it is overkill. I always back it up, but i figure one less chance of failure wont hurt.

See above post...
An unattended 'biner on a gri-gri can get easily get crossloaded or torqued in ways that will greatly reduce it's strength - hence the desire for steel.
