I am planning a trip to all points south of the Mason Dixon and I was wondering, If I could visit only one trad area in NC, what does eveyone recommend. I have heard alot about Rumbling Bald but I was wondering whether there are other good areas.

Dude-I would totally hit up the Linville Gorge if I were you. It's absolutely brilliant and there are some good multipitch climbs too.

Sounds Cool. Is the Kelley Guidebook any good for this area? And is there any special items you need for pro here?

Yes, Linville is in the Kelly guide.
Looking Glass, Moore's Wall, Stone Mtn., Laurel Knob (for long routes). and others....

NC is awesome. For great trad, there's Rumbling Bald, Linville Gorge (which includes Hawksbill, Table Rock, NC Wall, Amphitheater, Shortoff, etc.), Looking Glass, Moores Wall, Ship Rock, Whitesides and the newly opened Laurel Knob.
Three things to consider for your trip - season, type of climbing and route difficulty.
NC has year round climbing. Whether it's hot or cold, you'll usually have two or three good options.
Steep, slabs, cracks - we have a good selection.
If you're looking for 5.8 to 5.10-, drop me a PM. For harder routes, my knowledge is mostly secondhand.

thorne and cmtmbear on the money...Linville is absolutely amazing. i am shocked (and delighted) that more people don't go there to climb.
if you can give a window of time and a range (as broad as you wish), we could all give you way better info. to maximize your time. let us help you maximize that one crag!

Linville is a great climbing area. That said I would have to say Looking Glass is the best trad climbing crag in NC. I love the rock texture at LG. Something to think about: there is falcon closures on a good portion of Linville and other climbing areas around NC.

Thanks for the info everyone. Are there camping areas at either Linville or Looking Glass that climbers tend to congregate to? Like Hidden Valley or Camp IV or Camp Slime?

no, but at LG at least, you can camp for free in the forest (check the regs) right near the parking for the approaches (south side area has some nice camping). There are also several formal campgrounds nearby (USFS). Linville is more backcountry oriented so camping options there are numerous.

I was a Laurel Knob last weekend and the climbing was brilliant but its certianly not everyones cup of tea. If you like your routes long and have good sphincter control I would check it out.
